Austin police officer killed at a Walmart

A police officer was fatally shot early Friday at a Wal-Mart store in Austin, Texas, and?a suspect is in custody.

Austin police Chief Art Acevedo said the officer was shot in the neck and died at the scene around 2:30 a.m. Acevedo said the officer was responding to a routine call about a drunk man in the store.

KUT News reported that when the officer arrived at the scene, the suspect began to fight him. The suspect then pulled out a semi-automatic pistol, according to police, and shot the officer in the neck area.

The officer was able to radio for help, KUT said, but he later died in the store.

The officer's name has not been released.

Acevedo said two Wal-Mart employees tackled the suspect after the shooting and held him until another police officer arrived and arrested him.

According to KUT, the officer had two daughters, aged 6 and 10. Acevedo said he would like to see the shooter face murder charges.

"It is a tragedy on Good Friday to lose an officer like this, but it is part of what these men and women do," Acevedo said, according to KWTX.com. "They know when they become a police officer that this is a sacrifice they are willing to make."

Trayvon Martin 911 Call Controversy: NBC Apologizes For Editing George Zimmerman Recording

A version of the 911 tape of George Zimmerman reporting suspicious behavior by Trayvon Martin before killing him was edited, NBC admitted this week.

It wasn't doctored - his words were left intact - but it's what we didn’t hear that sheds light on the ultimately fatal Martin-Zimmerman confrontation.

On March 27, NBC’s Today Show aired Zimmerman’s call to the police, featuring these words: “This guy looks like he's up to no good … he looks black.”

The recording went viral, no doubt shaping public bias against Zimmerman. But it turns out Today shortened, and thus altered the meaning of, the call:

    Zimmerman: "This guy looks like he's up to no good. Or like he's on drugs or something. It's raining and he's just walking around, looking about."
    911 dispatcher: "OK, and this guy ... is he black, white or Hispanic?"
    Zimmerman: [pauses] "He looks black."

George Zimmerman’s actions February 26 remain dubious, and may still lead to criminal charges. Edited or not, the call still obviously shows he was told not to follow Martin that night, and his self-defense claim is highly questionable.

But, right now, he has not been charged.

Moreover, his description of Martin came only in response to a dispatcher's question. Was this racial profiling? Maybe. But the media dropped the ball.

Earlier this week, the network revealed its blunder.

"During our investigation it became evident that there was an error made in the production process that we deeply regret," said the network. "We will take the necessary steps to prevent this from happening in the future and apologize to our viewers."

The circumstances surrounding this divisive episode are undeniably complex. NBC's error will hopefully cause others to reflect on the extent to which the media and public pre-judge the Trayvon Martin case, which is still under investigation.

Motivational speaker Lou Tice dies at 76 ? Artesia News

SEATTLE (AP) ? The founder of the Seattle-based Pacific Institute and self-help mentor to several generations of local coaches and athletes has died.

Lou Tice was 76 and died Sunday after a brief illness. The Seattle Times reported (http://tinyurl.ms/50n6) that among those he influenced were former Washington Huskies football coach Jim Lambright and current Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll.

Tice, a Seattle native, was a football coach at Burien?s Kennedy High School in 1971 when he started the Pacific Institute, a corporation specializing in leadership development.

Tice also became a trusted figure for area athletes and coaches. Lambright asked Tice to mentor his coaches before seasons, then went to work for Tice after being fired at UW. Current UW coach Steve Sarkisian also worked with Tice and in a post on his website called Tice ?a great mentor and friend.?

The American Physical Therapy Association joins Olympic marathoner, Pacers Running Stores for live and online events

In celebration of National Physical Therapy Month in October, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is teaming up with Pacers Running Stores to raise awareness among the running community about injury prevention and improving performance. The education initiative leads up to the 36th annual Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on October 30, which annually attracts nearly 30,000 runners.

To help marathoners prepare for the race, APTA?s Move Forward campaign will co-host an online runner?s event with Pacers, publish The Physical Therapist?s Guide to Healthy Running, a comprehensive runner?s eGuide, and help runners improve their form through individual running analyses and Q&As at the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon Health and Fitness Expo.

Ballroom romance? Derek, Maria kiss on 'DWTS'

Monday night was Most Memorable Year night on "Dancing With the Stars," as the celebs recalled significant times in their lives and then set their moves to some related music. But one star and her pro partner decided it was a night to make a brand new memorable moment -- at least for the audience.

Maria Menounos' year of choice was 1988, and the song was "Material Girl" ? it reminded her of the times she wiled away the hours watching Madonna's video while her parents worked. For the audience, the year was 2012 and the song was, well, the unrecognizable version of "Material Girl" the house band performed -- that's what was playing as Maria and pro Derek Hough put on a romance-charged rumba, complete with a kiss -- or two.

The slow dance, often referred to as the "vertical expression of a horizontal desire," certainly lived up to its sexy reputation as the pair stretched out on the dance floor at one point and showed just how cozy they can get (at least in primetime).

The routine was their best of the season despite Maria's sometime bothersome (sometimes not) cracked rib woes. The judges raved about it, with head judge Len Goodman calling it a "mix of the ballroom with a little touch of the bedroom," before handing out a matching set of 9s.

Afterward co-host Brooke Burke tried to get to the bottom of the ballroom behavior.

"Twitter-nation is going crazy wanting to know if you guys actually kissed," she told the couple, who remained mum on the action. Then again, there's no need to talk when the lip lock was caught on tape.

Good luck fending off those dating rumors now, you two!

Romance wasn't the evening's only big emotion, as kisses were far fewer than tears on Monday night. Whether happy ones or sad ones, the waterworks flowed.

From the sad side, there was the night's top scorer Katherine Jenkins, who devoted her wistful waltz to her late father, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1996.

"I hope that when he watches this waltz he'll be so proud," she said before the routine.

Spinning across the floor to Josh Groban's "To Where You Are," she and partner Mark Ballas hit all the right steps in the moving dance. As they finished, Katherine was crying, her mother was crying -- heck, half the audience and two-thirds of the panel looked weepy -- but not Len.

The ballroom's elder statesman briefly ignored the unwritten rule of dishing out only high praise on Memorable Year night and offered a little choreography criticism about the lack of holds. One Goh, the former Oikos University student accused of killing seven people at?the college's campus in Oakland, Calif., told authorities he was upset?with being expelled?and?had sought out?a female college official who was not present, the city's police chief said Tuesday.

Goh "then went through the entire building systematically and randomly shooting victims," Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said at a news conference.

"We do know that he was upset at administrators at the school. We do know that he was upset with several students here because of the way he was treated when he was enrolled here two months ago," Jordan said.

He said Goh, 43,?had been teased although he did not elaborate. The South Korean national had been expelled, possibly for behavioral problems, according to Jordan.

Other reports indicated that Goh, who reportedly had been a?nursing student,?recently lost two family members and had debts.

In Monday's rampage --?the deadliest U.S. campus shooting in five years --?one witness said?Goh told students: "Get in line and I'm going to kill you all."

??????Jordan said Goh first took a receptionist hostage and then went looking for a particular female administrator. He then took the receptionist into a classroom and, on realizing the administrator was not there, he shot the receptionist and lined students up against a wall.

?Goh surrendered Monday afternoon at a grocery store several miles away from the scene.

Three others were injured but suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police told NBC Bay Area.

The station said at least one of the injured, a 19-year-old woman, was released from the hospital late Monday after suffering a gun shot wound to her arm.

The San Francisco Chronicle said Goh's brother, U.S. Army Sgt. Su Wan Ko, died in March 2011 in a car crash in Virginia while on special forces training.

It also reported that his mother, Oak Chul Kim, died a year ago in Seoul, where she moved after leaving Oakland, according to her former neighbors in Oakland.

The Chronicle said Goh used to live in Virginia, where records show a string of judgments against him, including an eviction from apartments in Hayes where he owed $1,300 back rent at the time he left.

Records show federal tax demands were issued in 2006 and 2009 for a total of $23,000, although the newspaper said he had managed to repay some of the money.

NBCSanDiego reported that Goh's parents?lived in two different apartments in Chula Vista between 1998 and 2000, though exact details on the street locations of those homes remain unknown.

Paul Singh, whose 19-year-old sister Devinder Kaur was shot in the arm during Monday's rampage, told Reuters that according to his sister, Goh was a former student who showed up to class for the first time in four months.

"'Get in line and I'm going to kill you all,' is what he said this morning, my sister told me. They thought he was joking at first,'" Singh said.

Tashi Wangchuk, whose wife attended the school and witnessed the shooting, said he was told by police that the gunman first shot a woman at the front desk, then continued shooting randomly in classrooms.

Wangchuk said his wife was in her vocational nursing class when she heard gunshots. She locked the door and turned off the lights.

The gunman "banged on the door several times and started shooting outside and left," he said. Wangchuk said no one was hurt inside his wife's classroom, but that the gunman shot out the glass in the door. He said she did not know the man.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Jeanne Thompson began going gray at 23. She colored her hair for years as she worked her way into management at a large Boston-area financial services company, then gave up the dye for good about a year ago.

The earth didn't shake, and the 44-year-old Thompson was promoted to top management the following year.

She is among a new type of gray panther, a woman who aspires to do well and get ahead on the job while happily maintaining a full head of gray.

"Women put pressure on themselves to color," the Exeter, N.H., woman said. "It's a bold statement to be gray because it's saying, 'You know what? I did let my hair go, but I'm not letting myself go.' People take me more seriously now. I never apologize for the gray hair."

But not everyone finds it so easy.

Laws, of course, exist to ward off discrimination in the workplace, yet legions of men and women have no interest in letting their gray fly. Not now, when the struggling economy has produced a stampede of hungry young job-seekers.

But gray heads have been popping up on runways and red carpets, on models and young celebrities for months. There's Lady Gaga and Kelly Osbourne ? via dye ? and Hollywood royalty like Helen Mirren, the Oscar-winning British actress.

Christine Lagarde, the International Monetary Fund chief, is one of the most powerful women in the world, and she keeps her hair gray. So does Essie Weingarten, founder and now creative director of the nail polish company Essie Cosmetics.

For regular working women, it's a trickier issue.

"I don't think a woman in the workplace is going to follow that trend," David Scher, a civil rights attorney in Washington, said with a laugh. "I think women in the workplace are highly pressured to look young. If I were an older working person, the last thing I would do is go gray."

Yes, he's a dude, and at 44 he has virtually no salt in his hair, but he wasn't alone in issuing a warning against workplace gray for women.

"While the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 was created to protect employees 40 years of age and older, some men and women may still encounter ageism in the workplace," said Stephanie Martinez Kluga, a manager for Insperity, a San Antonio-based company that provides human resources services to small and medium-size businesses.

"The long-standing perception that men with gray hair are experienced and women with gray hair are simply old may still be an issue that affects employees in workplaces across the U.S.," she said.

Some of today's new gray panthers also offer strong words of caution about exactly how well those anti-discrimination laws work.

Anne Kreamer is gray and proud, but she didn't unleash the color until she left her day job to become self-employed. She dedicates an entire chapter of her 2007 book "Going Gray" to workplace issues.

"We only fool ourselves about how young we look with our dyed hair," said the Harvard-educated Kreamer, a former Nickelodeon executive who helped launch the satirical magazine Spy before writing the book exploring her journey to silver.

When it comes to gray on the job, Kreamer said, context counts. The color might be easier in academia over high-tech, for instance, and in Minneapolis over Los Angeles. Job description and your rung on the ladder might also be in play: chief financial officer versus a lowlier, more creative and therefore more gray-tolerant position like assistant talent agent, for example.

Kreamer dubbed the largely unspoken phenomenon "hair-colorism."

In 1950, 7 percent of women dyed their hair, she said. Today, it's closer to 95 percent or more, depending on geographic location. In the '60s, easy, affordable hair dye in a box hit store shelves, changing the follicle landscape for good.

"When women were going to work, it was like they could reinvent themselves and say, 'I'm no house frau anymore.' Hair dye got kind of linked in there and we never looked back," said Kreamer, who went prematurely gray and colored for 25 years. "It's still very complicated."

Sandra Rawline, 52, in Houston knows how complicated it can be.

A trial is scheduled for June in her federal lawsuit accusing her boss at Capital Title of Texas of ordering her to dye her gray hair in 2009, when her office moved to a swankier part of town. The suit accuses him of instructing her to wear "younger, fancier suits" and lots of jewelry, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Rawline, an escrow officer and branch manager, wouldn't comment for this story. The newspaper said her superior called her lawsuit preposterous.

Weingarten, 62, began going gray at 18 and said she colored for years. She gave it up about 20 years ago.

"People would say, 'Are you crazy? You have to color your hair,'" she said. "I had my own business. I was an entrepreneur. I could do whatever I wanted, but the truth is I know a lot of women who are petrified to show gray hair because it means they're maturing."

The new "gray movement" doesn't keep tabs on membership, but blogs like Terri Holley's Going Gray are proliferating, along with pro-gray Facebook fan pages and Twitter feeds.

"Society has boxed in women on what's considered to be beautiful, and this defies how we're supposed to look," Holley said. "People say, 'I'm so glad I found you. I'm so glad we're having this conversation.'"

Dana King, 53, started going gray in her 20s, began dyeing in her 30s and went to work for San Francisco's KPIX in 1997, rising to news anchor. In January 2010, she first approached her general manager, a man whom she had known for a decade, about her giving up the dye.

"He didn't like the idea at all and he asked me not to do it," King said. Soon after, she did it anyway, with the comfort of a no-cut contract good to May 2013.

"It got down to the point where I was dyeing it every two to three weeks. I just decided, 'I'm not doing this anymore.' I felt like I had sold my soul and betrayed myself," she said.

After sharing her hair story on-air, King was deluged with emails from viewers, including many women who colored and some who worried she had fallen ill. "The response was overwhelmingly positive," King said. "They said it was a relief for them, that they could see someone that made it OK to be gray."

King knows her road to gray wouldn't have gone so well had she been a TV news star elsewhere.

"I work in a youth-oriented industry and I'm not an idiot," she said. "This is not Miami. This is not Los Angeles. I would have been fired had I worked in some other markets. I can't get a job anywhere else, I don't think. I have no illusions about what I've done and I'm good with that."

2012 NCAA Women's Basketball Final Four Preview: Connecticut Vs. Notre Dame

Picking the winner for today's matchup between the Connecticut Huskies and Notre Dame Fighting Irish today is no easy task.

Although Notre Dame won two of their three meetings this season, a more confident Connecticut team won the last one to take the 2012 Big East Tournament championship. And put simply, there hasn't really been one major statistical category that has determined winning and losing in the first three games these teams have played.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma was right to point out the potential importance of free throw shooting to the game, though the margins have been so narrow in that aspect that it's hard to say anything definitive at all. While turnovers will be significant between these two very good defenses, there might not be much we can say definitively from those first three games about how turnovers might influence this one. But the turnover story between these two teams has been interesting enough to be noteworthy.

X-Factor: UConn turnovers

Keeping the guards off the boards helped UConn hold Notre Dame to a season-low 26 total rebounds and a meager 20% offensive rebounding percentage.

Bringing that same intensity on the boards will be vital for UConn's success in today's game, particularly in order to offset the turnover advantage that Notre Dame's defense is likely to establish. But Notre Dame has to enter this game with some level of confidence - after dominating Maryland on the boards, beating a tough rebounding team in Cal, and knowing their guards can rebound against UConn, it might be a matter of simply maintaining their defensive aggressive to force turnovers and simply outworking UConn on the boards.
