Google gives Google Docs offline capabilities

Google has removed one of the big disadvantages to using cloud-based office apps - that you have to be connected to the Internet to use them.

That means people working on shared documents will be able to do their work offline and then when they are back online, their document will automatically sync up with the cloud.

Such offline capability could be handy for people who might need to work while travelling by plane without wireless Internet access, as well as for people who need to keep working when the network goes down.

Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group, said this is a good move for Google Docs but he's not sure why it took Google so long to do it.

"Offline access is something that Google should have made a priority and delivered before now," Old said. "Web access isn't nearly as ubiquitous as some might think and being able to do useful work offline is critical to most business people."

Google has been embroiled in a competition with Microsoft, which also has been pushing cloud-based apps for the enterprise. Microsoft, which has an obvious foothold in the enterprise with its Office software, has taken those apps to the cloud with its Office 365 suite.

Both companies are going after the lucrative enterprise market and they're using office-related applications to help them get there.

Olds said adding offline capabilities to Google Docs could boost Google's enterprise efforts. "The lack of offline use was certainly a big stumbling block for many potential Google Docs business users," he added. "Now that they have it, Google might see adoption pick up a bit over time."

Authorities identify federal agents in Mexico City's airport drug trafficking ring

MEXICO CITY - A Mexican official has identified two federal police officers who shot dead three of their colleagues at Mexico City's international airport this week and who allegedly are part of a cocaine trafficking ring that brought the drugs from Peru.

Federal police regional security chief Luis Cardenas Palomino says the slain officers were trying to arrest officer Zeferino Morales Franco when agent Daniel Cruz Garcia arrived at the scene and shot them from behind. The suspects remain at large.

He said Thursday that the government is offering a $360,000 reward leading to the officers' capture, who he described as "traitors."

Palomino says passengers would bring cocaine hidden in their body or luggage, and drop it off in bathrooms before reaching the immigration and customs check area. Corrupt officials would then circle back to pick up the drugs.

Dinosaurs were warm-blooded reptiles: Mammal bone study sheds light on dinosaur physiology

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? A study with extant mammals refutes the hypothesis on which the assumption that dinosaurs were ectotherms was based.

The work was carried out by researchers from Institut Catal? de Paleontologia (ICP) and Universitat Aut?noma de Barcelona (UAB). It has been published in Nature.

The study analysing the lines of arrested growth (LAG) in the bones of around a hundred ruminants, representative of the specific and ecological diversity of that group of mammals. The results show that the presence of these lines is not an indicator of an ectothermic physiology (does not generate internal heat), as had previously been thought, since all warm-blooded mammals have them. The study therefore dismantles the key argument of the hypothesis that dinosaurs could have been cold-blooded reptiles.

The work was carried out by Meike K?hler, ICREA researcher and ICP palaeontologist; Ronny Aanes, researcher from the Norwegian Polar Institute; Nekane Mar?n, PhD student at the UAB and Xavier Jordana, lecturer of postgraduate studies at same university.

LAGs are seen in bone sections as dark rings, similar to those seen in tree trunks. The rings are formed, both in the studied mammals and in trees, during the unfavourable seasons (winter or dry season) when the growth of the organism is arrested as a result of a lack of resources. The presence of LAGs in bones was, until now, considered to be the clearest indicator of ectothermy since the seasonal arrest of growth was related to the animal's inability to maintain a more or less constant body temperature (endothermy) during the season of scarce resources.

Meike K?hler explains: "the study we have carried out is very powerful, both in terms of the amount of material and the diversity of species with which we worked, but we did not design it to find a response to the thermophysiology of dinosaurs. We sought to better understand the physiology of extant mammals and how the environment affects them -- how their growth changes as a result of external temperatures, rain and the availability of food and water."

Understanding this was the first step to establishing discussions in paleontological research about the physiology of animals that lived several million years ago.

But the researchers realised that what they observed in the bones of different ruminants refutes the main argument for an ectothermic physiology in dinosaurs. Many hypotheses set out from the premise that large mammals -- endothermic par excellence -- do not have LAGs in their hard tissues since they do not need to arrest their growth responding to external temperature conditions. In fact, since LAGs have been observed in almost all species of dinosaur, many scientists considered that they were cold-blooded reptiles.

The article published in Nature offers the first systematic study, based on an extensive sample of mammals representative of a large variety of ecosystems, which shows that LAGs do not indicate an ectothermic physiology but give us information about how the physiology (metabolism) of an animal changes according to seasonal endocrinal changes, both in cold- and warm-blooded animals. These changes represent a common heritage in all vertebrates and are a kind of internal clock that regulates the animals' needs according to the seasonal availability of resources. Despite the fact that these physiological changes have a strong genetic component, they are also functional and their intensity depends on the ecological conditions in which the animals live. The main ecological factors are more rain and limited supply of food and water, rather than external temperature. This discovery opens up a major line of research into the conservation of biodiversity on our planet today.

"It may seem surprising that until now there has not been a similar systematic study to prove or disprove whether it is only ectotherms that leave these marks in their bones during growth. In fact, there are so many things we do not know that science does not always advance in a linear way. The ideas somehow had long been wandering among the scientific community, but the work we have published organizes them and bases them on data," says researcher Meike K?hler.

In fact, some previous studies had already questioned this hypothesis and among the international scientific community there has been increasing consensus about the idea that LAGs were not necessarily indicators of ectothermy. Similarly, examples of mammals that seemed to have LAGs in their bones had emerged. This study conclusively closes the debate.

Critical Mass: Filmmaker hopes to feature 3 NCDT dancers

A Colorado filmmaker is creating a documentary about three members of N.C. Dance Theatre, and she has turned to crowdfunding to help her put on the finishing touches.?

"Strength and Beauty" is the title and the theme of the film -- a group portrait of three ballerinas -- that Chelsea Wayant has gotten to the editing stage. She has posted her project on the funding site Kickstarter in hopes of raising $6,000 to get it to the screen. ??

Chelsea Wayant is a onetime ballet student who held onto her love of dance after her career aspirations turned toward film. She has a bachelor's degree in filmmaking from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a master of fine arts from UNC Greensboro. Her first feature film won the prize for best narrative feature at the 2009 Ava Gardner Independent Film Festival in Smithfield.?

Beginning in March 2011, Wayant shot more than 40 hours of film at NCDT. ?Wayant focused on three dancers who stood at different stages of their lives: Melissa Anduiza, just getting started as a professional; Alessandra Ball, in mid-career and preparing to star in "Sleeping Beauty"; and Traci Gilchrest, a veteran who was beginning to taper off.?

By introducing audiences to the three ballerinas, Wayant wants to "give voice to an icon that is in danger of disappearing from our society," she says in her Kickstarter appeal.?

The $6,000 she seeks would pay for a sound-editing specialist and help with film-contest fees. Pledges are nearly $1,200, and the Kickstarter deadline is July 9. Check out her proposal and site and see what you think about donating. If she's lucky, maybe she'll come back to Charlotte with a film to show. ?

3DS XL caught on video, looks great ? Video Games Reviews ...

With a little under two months until the 3DS XL sees a launch in the US, and a month until it arrives in Japan and across Europe, Nintendo has to have final units ready to start distributing. Lucky for us French gaming site Puissance Nintendo got some hands-on time with the new handheld and managed to capture video of it playing Mario Kart 7.

The feedback about the revised hardware seems to be very positive for the most part. Even though the unit has increased in size significantly to cater for the 90% bigger displays, the weight ends up being around about the same as the original 3DS. Weight distribution is also even and the rounded corners make for a comfortable grip, meaning the XL is going to be nice to hold for extended periods of time.

One of the biggest concerns when screen size is increased, but game resolution remains the same, is how good the games will look. Apparently Nintendo has managed to improve upon the 3D effect and also made 2D graphics look better than they did on 3DS. Puissance believe this is due to some sort of anti-aliasing light filter being added to the screen, but it could just as easily be Nintendo using higher quality displays that hide any detail loss. And as the video clearly demonstrates, viewing angles are great.

Another question that has arisen since the announcement is what the casing is like. It seems Nintendo has gone for a ?plastic imitating metal? effect, meaning it isn?t shiny plastic and won?t be a magnet for fingerprints.

So unless you need a smaller piece of hardware in your bag, it looks as though the 3DS XL might be the version to get. I for one will be picking one up come release as I definitely enjoyed playing games on my DSi XL more than the smaller, original hardware.

Navigating Health Insurance Issues After Your Diagnosis | A to Z ...

Posted by Reed on Jun 27, 2012 in Health Insurance | 0 comments

Though insurance companies aren?t supposed to be able to turn you down for a preexisting condition, cancer is an extremely expensive disease. Any insurance company that has figured out a way to avoid taking on cancer patients will do so if it all possible. Hopefully, if you have been diagnosed with some type of cancer, you already have a Health Insurance policy in place.

Keep Everything On The Up And Up

By making sure that you have a written prescription from your Physician, recommendations for specific types of services or doctors, and everything on paper, signed, sealed and delivered; you stand a better chance of not having to argue with someone as to whether not something is covered having to do with your cancer treatment; or a result of such. Insurance companies love their paperwork and will make as much as possible for you at every given opportunity. Supplying them with everything they need can be your way of thumbing your nose at them, if that helps at all. Of course even insurance companies have their limits. What if that the cost of your cancer treatment exceeds your Health Insurance?s annual limit? Fortunately, there are organizations available that can assist you in your endeavor to be cancer free and healthy once again.

Joining The Fight

If you yourself have cancer or someone with whom you are closely associated is going through the devastating disease, you may want to share your support or experience, for the support of others, by checking out an online source. By opening up your laptop and logging onto http://www.someonewith.com you will find not only apparel but gifts, free services, media and books, sections for beauty and the opportunity to chat a bit with others in the same boat. The journey through cancer is a difficult one, but with web sites like this one, the trip can be a little bit more tolerable. Increase your feeling of power rather than drowning in powerlessness. Join the fight against cancer instead of lying down and taking it.

Cancer is a hateful thing. It robs us of our loved ones and ends beautiful lives far too soon. If cancer were a person there wouldn?t be a jury in the world that would convict us of killing it. Join the fight against cancer by doing something that you don?t have to clear with your Health Insurance Company first.

Ask Bas Lansdorp About Going to Mars, One Way

NASA's been solicited ideas for exploring Mars, but Dutch entrepreneur Bas Lansdorp is already planning a different kind of trip than is likely to come from the U.S. government. Lansdorp's Mars One project has the goal of putting humans on Mars in 2022, with a twist that might dampen many people's hopes to be a Mars-exploring astronaut: the trip Lansdorp plans is one-way only. That means dramatically less fuel on board, because unlike typical Mars voyage plans, there would be no need (or ability) to carry the mechanism or the energy storage to return to Earth. If you (and three close companions) are willing to go be the first people to die on Mars, you'll also need to give up more than a pinch of privacy, because the Mars One plan to obtain the necessary funding is straightforward: create a media spectacle, and monetize it through advertising. (Note: If Elon Musk's optimistic sounding predictions are right, maybe one-way Marstronauts can get a return ticket, after all.) Many questions about the proposed journey are answered in the project's FAQ; check there before formulating questions. Ask Lansdorp about the practicalities and impracticalities of reaching Mars with as many questions as you'd like, but (lest ye be modded down) please only one question per post.
