Computer scientists present smile database

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? What exactly happens to your face when you smile spontaneously, and how does that affect how old you look? Computer scientists from the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) Faculty of Science recorded the smiles of hundreds of visitors to the NEMO science centre in Amsterdam, thus creating the most comprehensive smile database ever. The results can be seen via the link below. The research was conducted as part of the project Science Live, sponsored by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NOW) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

481 test subjects participated in the research of Theo Gevers and Albert Ali Salah. The researchers made a video recording of a posed smile and a spontaneous smile for each participant. The subjects also were also asked to look angry, happy, sad, surprised and scared. Gevers and Salah analysed certain characteristics, such as how quickly the corners of the mouth turn upwards. This knowledge can be applied to computer software which guesses ages, recognise emotions and analyse human behaviour.

The researchers also asked the test subjects to look at images of other test subjects. They had to guess the age of those people and state how attractive they found them. They were also asked to judge character traits, such as whether the person is helpful by nature, or if that person is perhaps in love?

The data collected allowed the researchers to develop software that can estimate people's age. The software takes into account whether someone is happy, sad or angry, and adjusts its estimate accordingly. The software appears to be slightly better at estimating ages than humans. On average, humans' estimates are seven years off , while the computer is six years off on average .

The research of Gevers and Salah also shows that you look younger when you smile, but only if you are over forty. If you are under forty, you should look neutral if you want to come across younger.

Be Your Own Contractor With These Home Improvement Tips | Exact ...

If you really find this article helpful Give it a PLUS from below and help us to spread it.

Linoleum is a fantastic alternative to tiling, as it is much more wallet friendly. But, it can get scuffed quite easily with use. You can quickly get rid of linoleum scuffing by rubbing white toothpaste on it with a cloth. Another quick fix is spraying WD-40 on the affected spot and making sure to degrease the area when you?re finished, with soapy water.

Paint your walls a new color. This can be a quick way to make a huge difference in your home?s appearance. Different colors can change the mood of the room and give the room a different personality. Many times a coat of paint can eliminate the need to change much else.

When you start to plot a home improvement project be sure to check with local officials on what permits you need. If you do not do this all the work that is done may be required to be torn down and the project started all over again due to regulation violations.

Figure out how you?re going to get rid of debris. Home improvement adventures, especially those requiring any kind of demolition, make debris that will only get in your way if you don?t choose what you?re going to do with it, prior to starting your project. Be sure that you rent a dumpster or have someone who has a very large truck, so that you can clear out the debris, as you continue with your home improvement project.

Start your kitchen cabinet install with the top cabinets. It will make it simpler for you to get nice and close to the wall so you do not have to stretch to reach the wall to place the screws into place. You should also start with the corner cabinet and line the rest of them up to that one; but be sure to use a level.

If you are hiring a contractor or landscaper to work on your home improvement project, make sure that they are licensed. If a contractor has a license, it means that they are a legitimate businessman who is skilled in the type of work you require. It also indicates that the contractor follows and is informed about the latest updates in the industry.

A fantastic tip for home improvement is to inspect your windows and see if they need to be replaced. The key here is to make sure you are going to get enough value for what you pay for. If the windows just need some maintenance it is better to do that than replace because windows are a major investment.

When it comes to home improvement, have a plot from the start through the end of your intended improvement. This will ensure that you stay within your budget and that you complete your intended project without the emotional factors being involved. It can be obvious both to a potential buyer and to your pocketbook if a home improvement project is made up as you go.

While printing up a full budget for every project is always smart, always add a small extra to your final price even if you reckon you have everything covered. It?s better to be ready for the unexpected if it occurs than to have your whole project stalled because you?re small a few dollars.

If you?re looking to build some recreational fun into your home, keep in mind that anything that poses as a potential hazard can raise your home insurance premiums. Adding a swimming pool or trampoline for the kids can increase your yearly premiums as much as 10 percent. Make sure to take this into consideration prior to purchasing to determine if the benefits outweigh the additional insurance costs.

A home improvement project is nothing to dread for the well-prepared homeowner. Excellent tips like the ones in this article, will help keep projects on-time, under-budget and hassle-free. A small self-education on the subject of home improvement can conquer a homeowner?s fears and guide him or her, through projects that make the home more gorgeous, more useful, and more valuable.

Infection warning system in cells contains targets for antiviral and vaccine strategies

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Two new targets have been discovered for antiviral therapies and vaccines strategies that could enhance the body's defenses against such infectious diseases as West Nile and hepatitis C. The targets are within the infection warning system inside living cells.

No vaccines exist for the viruses that cause West Nile or hepatitis C. New therapies are urgently needed to prevent and treat serious infections by these and related viruses.

The University of Washington is engaged in a major, multipronged effort to design therapeutics that harness the warning signals the body produces when viruses attack. Such therapies would prod people's cells into launching a stronger counterattack to control infections by elusive viruses.

UW specialists in how the body fends off viral diseases are studying pattern recognition molecules, called RIG-I-like receptors, found inside living cells. When these receptors detect virus invasions, they call in the immune system to fight infection.

Scientists in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Gale, Jr., UW professor of immunology, observed an interaction between these molecular dispatchers and a protein called 14-3-3 epsilon This protein acts a docking station where other proteins can gather. There they can more efficiently send out signals in response to threats.

The researchers noticed that the interaction between the alert trigger (RIG-I) and the docking station (14-3-3 epsilon) steps up when cells were infected with virus. The agitation prompts RIG-I to work with other proteins, such as TRIM25. Those proteins are essential for RIG-I to warn the immune system to respond to a virus intruder.

"Our work also demonstrated that RIG-I binding to 14-3-3 epsilon is important for RIG-I to move from within the cell where it detects viral RNA to a location on the cell's membrane where the cell's antiviral defenses can be activated," said Dr. Helene Liu, a postdoctoral fellow who led the study. The move is somewhat like running from the inner corridors of a building to a window to call for help.

"By understanding the molecular partners and location changes that RIG-I requires to convey its signal that virus is present in a cell, we can start to design therapeutics that can trigger this process to kick-off an antiviral immune response and fight virus infection," Liu said.

The scientists reported these initial findings in the May 17 issue of Cell Host & Microbe. The Gale laboratory reports additional observations on the RIG-I-like receptors in the August issue of Immunity, published online July 26.

Postdoctoral fellows Dr. Mehul Suthar and Dr. Hilario Ramos found that, during West Nile virus infection, an RIG-I like receptor called LGP2 promotes the survival and activity of CD8+ T white blood cells, commonly called killer T cells. These disease-fighters eliminate virus-infected cells from the body.

"By increasing the ability and length of time CD8+T cells can work within the body when West Nile virus is present, the immune system is strengthened and has a better chance of eliminating the virus," Suthar commented. Ramos added, "Based on this work, we can consider new ways to boost vaccine effectiveness through design of adjuvants or immune-stimulants. These might be applied within a vaccine approach to regulate LGP2 to enhance immunity to infection."

Gale directed the research effort for both projects. He heads the Center for Study of Innate Immunity to Hepatitis C Virus and the Center for Immune Mechanisms of Flavivirus Control, as well as two National Institutes of Health-funded multi-million dollar programs to develop new antiviral therapies and vaccine adjuvants.

"These two new discoveries," Gale said, "greatly advance our knowledge of how the body senses and responds to virus infection and provide us with new avenues to explore when designing antiviral therapies and new vaccines.

"West Nile virus is an emerging virus that has spread across the United States, and hepatitis C virus infects over 170 million people globally. Both viruses are devastating to the health of the individuals they infect. That is why the development of new clinical resources such as vaccines and antivirals for each is so critical."

West Nile virus is spreading throughout North America through infected mosquitoes. It can cause paralysis and death in people. Hepatitis C virus is transmitted through contact with blood or blood products containing the virus. It causes swelling and inflammation of the liver.

Most hepatitis C infections are persistent because the virus evades the immune defenses that normally limit the course of disease. The virus generates a chronic liver inflammation which scars the organ's tissues. The scarring can lead to liver failure and increases the risk of liver cancer. While therapies are available to treat hepatitis C infections, these treatments have harsh side-effects and are not effective in all people. No antiviral therapies are available to treat people infected with West Nile virus.

(AP) ? Fred Willard's improv series is a wipeout with ABC.

The network is pulling the last two original episodes of "Trust Us With Your Life," a move that comes two weeks after Willard's lewd conduct arrest at an adult movie theater.

Reruns of ABC's "Wipeout" will replace the Tuesday show hosted by Willard. The 72-year-old actor already had lost his job as narrator of a new PBS series, "Market Warriors."

In an appearance last week on Jimmy Fallon's late-night show, Willard said he was embarrassed by his July 18 arrest but insisted he had done nothing wrong.

The Los Angeles City Attorney's office determined that Willard's case was eligible for a diversion program that will keep him from being formally charged with lewd conduct if he completes the required courses.

Marcotte: Single Motherhood OK, Not Mothers ... - Fathers & Families

Is it possible for a person to be able to write but not read? ?I doubt it, but must confess that this nonsense by Amanda Marcotte raises the issue (Slate, 7/24/12). ?Hers is the third in Slate?s series spawned by a New York Times article on the hazards of single motherhood.

You remember Amanda Marcotte. ?She?s the ubiquitous opiner who, long after it was clear that no sex ? much less forced sex ? had occurred in the case of the three Duke lacrosse players falsely accused of rape, claimed that the men had ?held down? their accuser ?and f**ked her.? ?Principled observers doubted the rape claim from Day Two when the men announced that no sex had occurred and allowed police unfettered access to the premises to gather whatever evidence they desired. ?Four months after her libel, the Attorney General of North Carolina took the unprecedented step of finding the three factually innocent of any and all wrongdoing, to Marcotte?s deafening silence. ?With that fealty to intellectual honesty in mind, we can now deal with Marcotte?s decidedly tepid embrace of single motherhood.

Unlike Katie Roiphe, whose failed attempt at the same was tactfully but authoritatively destroyed by Brad Wilcox, Marcotte claims, in a blizzard of made-up statistics, unsupported assertions, non sequiturs and straw-man arguments, that single mothers ?do not necessarily choose to be single.? ?True enough; some fathers die, some go to prison, etc. ?Usually none of that is Mom?s fault, but she?s single nevertheless. ?But how many mothers fall into those categories and how many fall into the ones Marcotte carefully avoids discussing ? divorce and single-mother childbearing?

The answer is that 70% of divorces are filed by women and they do so because they know they?ll get custody of the kids. ?So in fact a lot of those mothers ? the ones without a paramour waiting to marry them ? decide precisely to be single mothers. ?What about the 42% of children born to single mothers? ?That?s about 1.7 million children per year in the United States. ?Now, about half of those have co-habiting fathers, so, though unmarried, they?re not exactly single, but that?s still a hefty number of kids who are either born without a father close at hand or have a father taken from them by the tyranny of the family court system.

And yes, those are choices made by mothers. ?Some of those choices are defensible, some marriages truly are insupportable and sometimes even the pill fails, but Marcotte would like us to believe that, in some way, women have single motherhood foisted on them by??outrageous fortune,? I assume, and of course by men. ?But whatever her actual claims, which aren?t at all clear, for Marcotte, single motherhood must be someone?s fault other than single mothers themselves.

Marcotte?s article is so strange and so nutty that it?s paradoxically hard to criticize. ?How best to convey the secondary-school triviality of it? ?Let?s begin with her naked assertions.

Most women who have children have partners they intend to stay with.

A lot of the time, much-wanted relationships fall apart.

But in a substantial number of cases, the men just quit their families.

That?s why only 41 percent of custodial parents receive child support.

Sixty-two percent of mothers parenting without a man in the house have been married, and most of the rest probably thought that marriage or a long-term commitment was in the cards.

Now, that?s not all of them, but I mention those five because they?re consecutive. ?Five unsupported claims in a row may be a record. ?Marcotte offers nothing at all to back them up and indeed, one of them is just flat wrong. ?Actually, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 50.6% of custodial parents have a child support order, but the factual wrongness of her claim actually obscures its full inaccuracy. ?After all, men are far more likely to be ordered to pay child support than are women. ?The Census Bureau tells us that 55% of non-custodial fathers versus only 30% of non-custodial mothers pay child support and that fathers pay a larger percentage of what they owe than do mothers. ?But Marcotte knows none of that which again urges that question about writing and reading.

Then there?s her claim that ?in a substantial number of cases, the men just quit their families.? ?Really? ?Marcotte gives no facts to back up the claim and a remarkable amount of solid social science casts considerable doubt on it, but again, she? have to have read articles from the Fragile Families and Child Well-being data, Sanford Braver?s ?Divorced Dads,? much of Kathryn Edin?s work, reports from Child Trends, Brinig and Allen?s study of divorce, and countless others. ?It?s impossible to conclude that Marcotte reads at all, otherwise she?d know that fathers of all income levels, racial and ethnic categories, religions, etc., overwhelmingly desire continuing relationships with their kids. ?That?s why fathers don?t tend to file for divorce and mothers do; fathers know they?ll lose their children and mothers know they won?t. ?Divorced fathers are far more likely to remain involved with their children and pay their child support if mothers don?t stand in the way, so many of those who lose contact were shoved aside by their ex-wives and the courts that abet their every move.

In the face of much social science that disproves her thesis, Marcotte opts for baseless assertion that agrees with little but a carefully constructed anti-father zeitgeist.

Marcotte eventually gets down to grappling with the fact that the poor have lower marriage rates than the more affluent and better educated. ?According to her, that actually reflects the superiority of the poor?s commitment to marriage. ?Yes, you read that right.

Wilcox assumes that marriage success is due to commitment to the value of marriage, and because blue state progressives with children break it off less frequently, they must just like marriage more. But?a study at UCLA demonstrates he has it backwards: ?Poor people hold more traditional values toward marriage and divorce than people with moderate and higher incomes,? that is to say, they?re more ?marriage-minded?.

In the first place, Wilcox assumes no such thing. ?What he does is what so many other observers have done; he simply states that the poor tend to not get married and, particularly when kids come along, that tends to keep them poor. ?I?m perfectly willing to accept that, when asked their views on the subjects of marriage and children, the poor may tend to express more conservative ones than do the better off. ?But whatever happens in the deep recesses of their hearts, it?s what they do that matters. ?Children of single mothers don?t do as well as those of intact families because they?re children of single mothers, not because of how their mothers answer a survey. ?But to Marcotte, the reverse is true; being a single mother means that you value marriage while being married means you don?t.

In his answer to Katie Roiphe, Brad Wilcox asked a question similar to one I had asked in my review of her article.

Surely a progressive like Roiphe should be concerned about all this, rather than dismissing the recent?New York Times?news story on the marriage divide in America as a ?puritanical and alarmist rumination on the decline of the American family.? Since when is it puritanical and alarmist in progressive circles to raise the red flag about a major driver of social and economic inequality?

Given the fact that single mothers and their children are far more likely to live in poverty than are their married peers and their children, what?s a liberal/progressive doing plumping for single motherhood? ?Since the children of single mothers are much more likely than the children of intact families to remain stuck on the bottom rungs of the economic ladder, why do ?progressives? like Roiphe and Marcotte encourage women to have children without a man to help support and care for them?

Wilcox asked the question and Marcotte responded to his article, but tellingly, she failed to answer it. ?Although it?s an obvious criticism of her and her article, Roiphe completely refused to address it. ?By now, the reason should be clear ? they can?t. ?The simple fact is that the Left?s appropriate concern for the welfare of the poor and working classes is on a collision course with feminism?s disdain for fathers and marriage. ?Fatherlessness and non-marital childbearing condemn many women and children to lives on the edge. ?It?s time leftists made a choice.

But I don?t expect Amanda Marcotte to make the hard decisions required when two ?isms? collide. ?My guess is she doesn?t even know there?s an accident already in progress. ?After all, to know that would take some reading.

Thanks to Glenn for the heads-up.

PST: Solo's senseless Twitter fight with Chastain

The Olympics have started gloriously for Pia Sundhage?s team. In fact, given such a rousing Opening Ceremonies just south of the U.S. women?s quarters, seen by record numbers, and such a promising start in the side?s reach for gold, things could only be better for the first ladies of American soccer if it were actually raining rose petals at their Glasgow base.

So, why are we talking about a petty and unflattering public spat ? one that has nothing much behind it?

Because U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo has made it that way.

Read up ? and then meet me at the bottom of the Twitter screen grab.

source:

.

That is Solo swinging away at NBC soccer analyst Brandi Chastain. And that is Solo being her outspoken self, which isn?t always a bad thing. Sometimes things need to be said.

(MORE: Jenna Pel?s analysis of Saturday?s contest)

The trouble is that Hope has no filter ? and sometimes things don?t necessarily need to be said. Or, perhaps, they need to be handled quietly, through back channels, with greater subtlety and less social media amplification.Solo was quite vocal in criticism for then-coach Greg Ryan back in 2007. She has also used Twitter to ?have a go? at WPS and at magicJack.

(Full disclosure: this blog is an NBC property; NBC is the U.S. Olympics rights holder, of course)

Now Chastain is the target of her social media rancor. We could have a lively discussion about Chastain as a broadcaster, and there is surely some history between Chastain and Sundhage, which means that agendas could be in play in the conversation. That?s all fair to talk about ? but it?s something beside the point here.

Because if Chastain spewed something Saturday worthy of such outrage, I sure missed it. A quick canvas of social media shows that others did, as well. Chastain has been critical here and there of the U.S. run-up to the summer games, but there was little venom in her appraisals Saturday.

This was about the worst of it, what Chastain said about defender Rachel Buehler?s responsibilities:??Defend. Win the ball. And then keep possession. And that?s something that Rachel Buehler actually needs to, I think, improve on in this tournament.?

The acrimonious Tweets came so quickly after Saturday?s final whistle, Solo almost certainly didn?t hear any of the broadcast herself. This is probably about old wounds, or it?s about bad information provided by someone beyond the team.

source: Getty Images

Either way, Solo looks rather petty in this one. Chastain had lots of good and a few bad things to say about the United States, which prevailed comfortably over Colombia.

It could be this ?new guard? and ?old guard? issue at work; Chastain was among the heroes of another day.

But is that really so important with bigger fish and chips to fry in the UK? There is an Olympic gold medal at stake, and presumably some most of the other U.S. players and staff don?t give a five-ringed hoot about what Chastain says to audiences back home, within reason, of course. They may roll their eyes a bit, but they understand that firing back on Twitter does zero for the greater gold-chasing good, so they move professionally forward.

Why would America?s No. 1 in goal potentially jeopardize team chemistry and create a wholly unnecessary distraction on such an inconsequential issue?

Good question. Maybe Solo can provide some answers; we hear Twitter is good for stuff like that.

Police Have 'Great Concern' For Baby Taken From... | Stuff.co.nz

Alyssa Barker

Supplied

TAKEN: Toddler Alyssa Barker was taken from her Helensville home.

A woman who watched the 6pm news tonight recognised the woman and child who were staying with her as Skye Mason and Alyssa Barker.

Alyssa was taken from her family home in the tiny settlement of Makaurau, north of Auckland, at about 3pm on Friday.

Mason also disappeared from this property at about this time after she had been welcomed into the home by Alyssa's parents.

She had been taken in by the family after they had taken pity on her for sleeping rough in the neighbourhood.

The woman who alerted police tonight of having Mason and Alyssa in her home appears to also have been a good Samaritan.

She had waited until the pair was asleep before she called the police at 9.15pm to notify them of her house guests.

Alyssa will soon be reunited with her family and 27-year-old Mason has been taken into police custody.

Police, who attended the Swanson address, said Alyssa was well and didn?t seem to be suffering any ill-effects as a result of her 36-hour absence.

Detective Inspector Stan Brown of Waitakere Police said he and his staff were delighted to be able to return Alyssa to her family and very grateful to media for their support during what was a nervous search.

"This is one story that does not have a tragic end for a child and for that, we are very happy."

Police earlier said Mason had a history of mental illness and a small criminal history.

Chinese microbot walks on water, skims the surface of insect-inspired design

Water jumping microbot proves anything bugs can do, robots can do too

Bugs are creepy. You don't need to be an entomophobe to empathize with that sentiment. But bugs are also inspiring -- to researchers in China, that is. Taking a cue from nature, a team of engineers from the country's School of Chemical Engineering and Technology have devised a microbot weighing just 0.02 lbs (11 grams) that can repeatedly jump across the surface of water without tanking. How'd they do it? Well, by using a highly repellent foam coating, the strider-like bot's legs are able to stay afloat with every 5.5 inch (14 cm) leap it makes, buffering the force that would normally plunge it below the H20. The creation of this hydrophobic mini-insectoborg isn't exactly the first of its kind, other aquatic gliders have come before, but this itty bitty fella's the first to successfully and repeatedly hop along an aqueous top. Unfortunately, there's no video demo for you to feast your eyes upon, so you'll just have to take our word for it.

CNN chief Walton to leave ratings-starved network

(Reuters) - CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton said on Friday he is leaving the once-dominant cable news network, which has struggled in the ratings race in recent years.

Phil Kent, chief executive of Turner Broadcasting, will begin a search for a new president, the network said. He is departing on December 31.

"CNN needs new thinking. That starts with a new leader who brings a different perspective, different experiences and a new plan," said Walton, 54, president since 2003.

CNN, founded in 1980 and now owned by Time Warner Inc, has tried to hold the middle ground in its news coverage, a position that some blame for its ratings erosion, while ratings have risen for competitors Fox News and MSNBC, which blend news with opinion and political commentary.

News Corp owns Fox, while MSNBC is now owned by cable giant Comcast Corp after its purchase of NBC two years ago.

The opinion programs on No. 1 cable news network Fox News skew conservative, while commentaries on MSNBC leans liberal.

From last September until the week ended July 22, CNN has trailed both networks, pulling in an average of 584,000 total viewers in primetime, compared with Fox's 1.82 million viewers and MSNBC's 726,000 viewers, according to Nielsen.

For the second quarter, CNN posted its weakest primetime ratings in 21 years, and total viewers fell 35 percent from a year earlier. It also received criticism in June for initially misreporting a Supreme Court health-care ruling.

One positive for CNN under Walton's stewardship has been its financial performance; the network is highly profitable. This year, CNN is on track to post record operating profit of $600 million.

"When Jim Walton assumed the presidency of CNN in 2003, it was underperforming and earnings were in serious decline," said Time Warner Chief Executive Jeff Bewkes in a statement. "Since then, he and CNN have tripled earnings, doubled margin and delivered annual growth of 15 percent."

Under Walton, CNN debuted shows such as "Anderson Cooper 360" and "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," according to CNN's website.

Time Warner shares rose 57 cents, or 1.5 percent, at $38.94 on Friday. The company reports second-quarter earnings August 1.

Board Games ? Have Deep Historical Roots Buried While in the ...

British archeologist Charles Leonard Woolley unearthed the primary known board game in the late 1920?s. He was excavating a burial tomb in Ur, exactly what is now southern Iraq. The adventure, buried with other treasure, have been interred nearly 4,Five centuries earlier. The Royal Bet on Ur would be the earliest known board game. Not only did Woolley locate the game board and game pieces, also, he found instructions for playing the action. They were engraved in cuneiform texts located at the website. The Royal Game of Ur, or maybe the ?game of 20 squares? would have been a race game with two players racing to your end of the board. Now similar game boards have been located throughout the ancient world, from Egypt to India. The adventure Woolley found can still be played today, just as the ancient Sumerians enjoyed it.

Board games have been popular in just about every known civilization. Many civilizations were playing board games before they developed any kind of written language.

Board games come in two basic types. The primary uses method to win the video game. The object is always to block or capture opposing game pieces or capture larger areas of the game board. Monopoly and checkers both are examples of particularly game. Strategy alone doesn?t insure victory.

Chance plays a tremendous role in every board games, although not all. The most respectable games, chess as an example, focus on skill with little luck involved.

Purists feel that luck is an undesirable element. They feel the games ought to be based positioned on strategy and skill. Others check out element of chance gives these games more complexity all sorts of more possible strategies. They will feel the component luck makes the games more exciting. On the other hand, games that are completely games of chance, where no or few decisions are made, quickly become boring to the majority adults. Many children?s games are games of luck with few decisions for being made.

The next types of games are race games. Two or more players move pieces in the race from just one point on the board to a new. Backgammon is an demonstration of a race game. Again, the component to chance is a vital ingredient with these games.

Luck is introduced into your game in many ways. About the most ways is to try using dice. The dice can determine how many units a play can move, how forces fare in battle or which resources a farmer gains. Another common method of introducing change has been a deck of special cards. In yet other games spinners and also other such items are used to determine the play.

Yet another type of board games is a combination both of the above types. These games employ ways to conduct a race.

Board Games Pre-date Reading And Writing

Games have been popular for hundreds of years. The game of 20 squares was played from Egypt to India in excess of 4,000 in the past. Nearly 3,000 in the past a game that resembles backgammon got its start in the same region. Games using stone marbles were created in Egypt nearly 1,000 years later.

A board game is a game messed around with a pre-marked surface and counters or pieces which might be moved charges. Methods of chance are often used, usually dice or cards, to ascertain the movement in the pieces or counters along the surface of the board.

We?re not really sure why early games were developed. Some argue these games were a machine for conducting religious services. Others claim people were employed to teach tips for war. Today?s board games are recreational and considered good family entertainment.

Board games became popular inside U.S. during the early 1900s. Because population moved heli-copter flight farm, people had more time and more money to pursue leisure activities. Board games were family members recreation easily played in the home. Chess, checkers and backgammon became tremendously popular.

The most popular board game of them all is Monopoly. In 1904 Elizabeth Maggie patented ?The Landlord?s Game? an early on version of Monopoly. It turned out based upon economic principles and was made to teach housing ownership and management.

In 1933, Clarence Darrow copyrighted a version of ?The Landlord?s Game.? He called it ?Monopoly.? He joined the read more game company, Parker Brothers, for help producing the overall game. They turned him down as they said it would not sell. He started selling read more here Monopoly for that 1934 Christmas season. He was overwhelmed with orders. Parker Brothers opted for produce the game one year afterwards. Monopoly is now printed in 15 languages and sold worldwide.

'Wazzock': British media hammer Romney on Olympic comments

(Charles Dharapak/AP)

LONDON?On day three of his overseas tour, Mitt Romney woke up to unfriendly headlines from the British media, who continue to trash him for telling NBC News that he found preparations for the Olympics here "disconcerting."

"Mitt the Twit," declared The Sun tabloid, condemning Romney as a "wannabe president."

The Independent headlined their take on Romney's trip, "Romneyshambles"?accusing him of not only committing a diplomatic gaffe but later "the cardinal sin of U.S. politics, flip-flopping" on his criticism.

The Daily Telegraph suggested Romney's "Olympic gaffe" had overshadowed his trip to London.

Meanwhile, the conservative Daily Mail slammed Romney as "devoid of charm, offensive and a wazzock."

Romney's comments led newscasts on both Sky News and the BBC on Thursday night and early Friday morning, just hours ahead of the Olympic opening ceremonies here.

"Is this guy really prepared to be president?" one Sky News reporter asked in his Thursday night report about Romney's day in London. The reporter trashed the GOP candidate's comments as "just daft."

Romney has repeatedly tried to dial back his criticism, first in a news conference Thursday outside 10 Downing Street, where he had met with British Prime Minister David Cameron, who had been publicly critical of Romney's remarks earlier in the day.

[Get more updates from Romney's overseas trip by following @hollybdc on Twitter]

In an interview with CNN's Piers Morgan Thursday night, Romney again tried to contain the controversy, telling the CNN host he believes the London games will be successful.

"It's great. It's absolutely fabulous," Romney said of being in London for the games. "You know I'd never been to an Olympics before I was given the Olympic job. I mean I've done the same thing everybody else did. I watched the games on TV. But to actually be here and to experience not just the athletes but also the volunteers who are working hard and excited, and then the whole community comes together? It's fabulous."

Citing the "enthusiasm" of the people in London, Romney added, "I think you are going to see terrific games that will be long time in our memories."

17-year-old builds neural network capable of detecting breast cancer

Every year Google holds on online science fair competition that is open to anybody between 13 and 18 years of age. It?s in this competition we get to see the bright minds of tomorrow, people who will no doubt go on to do amazing things with their lives. Once such person is 17-year-old Brittany Wenger. Her idea was to develop a global neural network based in the cloud that can help doctors diagnose breast cancer.

Artificial neural networks (ANN?s) are a way for computer scientists to model a brain, but in some ways they are more powerful. An ANN can see patterns in data that no human can, thus they can be more accurate and the more training data a neural network is given, the more accurate they can be. Brittany?s idea came from to goal of making breast cancer biopsies to be less invasive. Fine needle aspirates are the least invasive biopsy procedure, but doctors often need to perform more invasive procedures in order to be certain.

By looking at nine different input features and comparing them to the training examples, Brittany?s cloud-based neural network can detect malignant breast tumors with an accuracy of 99.11%, which is incredible. Because her neural network is deployed in the cloud using Google?s app engine it means it can be accessed from?existing?medical systems as well as through a web browser or mobile apps.

Brittany took the Grand Prize at the Google Science Fair which consisted of $50,000 for a scholarship, a trip to the Galapagos islands, and an internship with one of the fair?s sponsors. She?s also hoping that her program can be put to use in actual hospitals soon and that it can be extended to other forms of cancer.

I took a look through Brittany?s presentation slides and was astonished at her level of intelligence. Having just completed a degree in software engineering I still don?t understand neural networks enough to even replicate what she?s done. I can only dream of contributing something to the world as helpful as this, but it?s?definitely?an inspiration to go further and try to achieve it.

Germ Airways, You're Cleared for Takeoff: The U.S Airports Most Likely to Spread Pandemics

When people travel by plane, even solo flyers are never really alone: hitching a ride are millions of germs that could potentially spread a number of serious and even lethal illnesses.

How airport travel factors into the spread of pandemics is the focus of a study released recently in the journal PLoS One. Using a new statistical model and network theory, MIT researchers ranked U.S. airports in terms of how they might play a role in the first 15 days of disease spread. New York?s Kennedy International Airport ranked number one, followed by Los Angeles International and Honolulu International.

Air traffic wasn?t the only component that factored into the ratings. Connectivity, traffic and geography were the three key elements that gave the airports their standings as contagion hot spots. Also factored into the equation were airport waiting times.

MORE: Alarming Whooping Cough Rates May Hit a Record High

Honolulu, for example, pales in comparison traffic-wise to JFK, with only 30 percent as much air traffic as the New York hub. But because it?s smack in the middle of the Pacific Ocean it has proximity to Asia, Australia and the U.S. Other super-spreaders included San Francisco, Newark Liberty and Chicago O?Hare. Louisville International Airport in Kentucky ranked last.

In establishing individual travel patterns, researchers looked at cellphone data on how humans move, and how fluids flow through in subsurface rock. Rather than consider travel a random thing, they theorized that airplane passengers create patterns that can be reproduced.

?The findings could form the basis for an initial evaluation of vaccine allocation strategies in the event of an outbreak,? said co-author Ruben Juanes in a news release, ?and could inform national security agencies of the most vulnerable pathways for biological attacks in a densely connected world.?

How does this information change the way you feel about flying? Let us know in the comments.

Alexis, Jim Bellino Threaten Legal Action Against Tamra Barney ...

Bellinos vs. Barney!

Alexis Bellino of The Real Housewives of Orange County and her husband Jim Bellino issued a joint statement Monday regarding recent remarks fellow Bravo star Tamra Barney made against them.

"The Real Housewives of Orange County is a reality show that is meant to entertain and engage audiences with the lives of its cast members. We recognize that the personalities, drama and conflict of the show attract fans to the popular Bravo reality series," the couple says in a statement to Us Weekly. "Unfortunately, some cast members use the show as a platform for personal attacks and character assassination, perhaps out of personal insecurity or simply to inflict pain. To the extent possible, we try to ignore this behavior."

PHOTOS: Biggest Housewives fights ever

"Recently, however, that has become all but impossible," they continued. "The escalation of Tamra Barney's attacks has reached the level that we have been advised to take legal action. To be clear, Tamra's most recent statements are completely false. While her motivation may be to elevate herself by hurting others, the law does provide boundaries outside of which even she may be held liable. This vicious and malicious attack on our family will no longer be tolerated. We have continually tried to take the high road, however, if necessary, we are prepared to defend ourselves against these unfounded, slanderous and defamatory remarks to the fullest extent of the law."

The joint statement comes after Barney defended calling Alexis "Jesus Jugs" during the Real Housewives of Orange County reunion special.

Barney, 44, recently shared her reaction with Rumor Fix about a blog Alexis wrote addressing comments Barney made in the reunion special, during which she called her "Jesus Jugs."

VIDEO: Alexis gets a nose job

"Unlike Alexis, I don't need to hide behind the Jesus curtain and I don't feel the need to preach," says Tamra. "When someone is constantly preaching about something they are lying! Alexis and Jim are faux Christians, like her ring. Does she think Jesus would be proud of her for judging me as a Christian, and the crosses in my house? Jim Bellino used to take Peggy Tanous to strip clubs after church when they were dating!"

In her recent Bravo blog, Alexis explained why she found the comment so offensive. "Jesus Jugs doesn't just cross the line, it catapults over it. That comment has offended Christians everywhere," she wrote. "How does she decorate her home in crosses yet make a remark like that without an ounce of guilt? Then she is promoting Jesus Jugs wine glasses her Facebook page? So now it's blasphemy along with defaming Jesus and monetizing on what He sacrificed for us."

Breast Size Linked To Breast Cancer Risk, Study Says

Jul 23rd, 2012

A larger breast size is linked to increased risk of breast cancer, a new study has found.

The study, published online in BMC Medical Genetics, used data from California-based genetics company 23andMe. Researchers sent out survey questions to more than 16,000 women and asked them about their bra cup and band sizes and compared them to genetic data on mutations.

Researchers identified seven genetic determinants for breast size, three of which are associated with mutations linked to breast cancer.

The underlying factor for the link could all boil down to estrogen, the female sex hormone that influences mammary gland growth and tumors.

?One of the variants is known to regulate the expression of the estrogen receptor gene which plays a vital role in breast growth and in the majority of breast cancer cases,? said Dr. Nicholas Eriksson, lead author and principal scientist at 23andMe. ?Another one of these mutations is located in a region of the genome that often shows abnormalities in people with a certain subtype of breast cancer.?

The study points out the role of genes in women?s breast sizes. Researchers were surprised to discover the link between the genetics of breast size and the genetics of breast cancer.

?We specifically asked about bra cup size as an approximation for breast size using a 10-point scale ranging from ?Smaller than AAA? to ?Larger than DDD,?? Eriksson said. ?Most of the genetic factors we identified for breast size lie in regions of great importance for breast cancer.?

The study did not establish a direct link between breast size and breast cancer. However, researchers say that it may offer answers to questions about the role of breast structures on breast cancer risk.

?Although the connections between these genetic factors ? breast size and breast cancer aren?t fully understood ? our findings give clues to the function of some of these genes and regions that might be useful in combating breast cancer,? Eriksson said.

The Direct Marketing Voice ? Why Video Matters More and More to ...

Video. You?ve watched plenty of it. You know how it can influence behavior. You?ve seen what it can do for those companies blessed with big advertising budgets. But what does it mean for you, the small business owner?

It?s no secret that businesses actively using video in their marketing mix enjoy more sales, more reach, and more visibility than those that don?t. If you still need convincing, a simple online search will reveal thousands of articles, studies and statistics which support this simple fact. I could list a bunch of them right here and now, but that would make for a very long blog post. Expense, while still a factor in some ways, is no longer the monolithic and intimidating barrier it once was. Basic video can be shot, edited and posted online with as little as a mobile phone camera and a free YouTube account.

Although the focus of this post is video, small businesses today would also do well to embrace mobile technology, developing mobile-friendly versions of their web presence and innovative ways to engage with and enable their customers to interact with their products and services anywhere and any time they choose. I won?t kid you, it?s not cheap and certainly not without some pitfalls, but the rewards can be significant and could possibly put you so far ahead of your competition it would take them months or even years to catch up.

Video is also great for offering tips and tricks on how to use your products and services most effectively. Imagine a customer on the verge of deciding whether to order from you or from your competition ? similar product, similar price ? but, you happen to have 2 or 3 ?how to? videos showing unboxing, assembly, optimal placement, usage or device settings? now which company do you think will get the sale? These videos don?t have to be fancy, just helpful. For example, here?s one of our recent video tips we did for our QuantumCards app.

Take stock of your offerings. Look at your products and services as your customers and prospects do. Figure out how to present each one in it?s best light, grab a camera and start shooting!
