Patterns in adolescent brains could predict heavy alcohol use

ScienceDaily (Aug. 8, 2012) ? Heavy drinking is known to affect an adolescents' developing brain, but certain patterns of brain activity may also help predict which teens are at risk of becoming problem drinkers, according to a study by researchers in the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and VA San Diego Healthcare System. Their results will be published in the September issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, online August 8.

This study focused on 12 to 16-year-olds whose brains were scanned using special functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) prior to the onset of drinking, and then again three years later. About half of this group transitioned into heavy drinking over the 3-year period. However, when imaged before they began drinking, this cohort already showed less fMRI response in regions of the brain previously linked to heavy drinking.

"Interestingly, this study showed that teens who initially showed less activation in certain brain areas were at greater risk for becoming heavy drinkers over the next three years," said principal investigator Susan Tapert, PhD, professor of psychiatry at UC San Diego School of Medicine and VA San Diego Healthcare System.

Over time, adolescents who initiated heavy drinking exhibited less efficient processing of information.

"That's the opposite of what you'd expect, because their brains should be getting more efficient as they get older," said lead researcher Lindsay M. Squeglia, PhD of UC San Diego Department of Psychiatry.

Once this group began drinking heavily -- defined by episodes of consuming four or more drinks on an occasion for females, and five or more drinks for males -- their brains already started showing the patterns previously seen in heavy drinkers: more activity in certain areas of the brain as they tried to perform a memory test. These brain areas included the parietal lobe (which helps process spatial information), and frontal lobe (the portion of the brain involved in, among other things, short-term memory tasks, planning, and organization).

"At the point these teens began drinking heavily, the fMRI data revealed greater parietal and frontal activity during a spatial working memory task in heavy drinkers versus light drinkers, despite equivalent performance on the tasks and after considering their brain activation patterns before drinking started," said Squeglia.

The study's findings add to evidence that heavy episodic drinking during adolescence may be followed by subtle alterations in brain functioning. But the research also points to neural response patterns that could indicate a risk factor for future substance use.

"Our results suggest there could be a pre-existing vulnerability, and could provide clues to the biological origins of problem drinking," said Squeglia.

Additional contributors to the study include Reagan R. Wetherill, PhD, UC San Diego; and Carmen Pulido, PhD, Joanna Jacobus, PhD, and Gregory G. Brown, PhD, UC San Diego and VA San Diego Healthcare.

The study was funded by grants from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, part of the National Institutes of Health (#F31 AA18940, R21 AA019748 and R01 AA13419).

Romney says Obama favors 'culture of dependency'

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney accused President Barack Obama on Tuesday of ditching a long-standing work requirement for welfare recipients, accusing him of fostering a "culture of dependency" and backing up the charge with a new television commercial.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said the allegations were "blatantly dishonest ... hypocrisy knows no bounds." He added that Romney, while serving as Massachusetts governor, had once petitioned the White House to loosen employment rules for those on welfare.

Romney made his accusation in a relatively rare occurrence in the race for the White House ? an appearance before voters outside the small group of battleground states likely to settle the Nov. 6 election.

Illinois and its 20 electoral votes are politically safe territory for Obama in the fall. Romney was there for a fundraiser as well as a stop at a manufacturing company, part of the intense competition between the two candidates to stockpile cash for the stretch run to Election Day.

Romney picked up more than $2 million during his swing through Chicago, and another fundraising evening in West Des Moines, Iowa, gave him at least another $1.8 million.

The president was speaking at two private events, one of them a fundraiser, at a hotel a few blocks from the White House. And after being outraised by Romney in recent months, his campaign announced a fundraising "shoot-around" and dinner in New York on Aug. 22 featuring several professional basketball stars.

In a race as close as this one, the taunts were getting personal.

Romney, interviewed on Fox News, said Obama was "saying things that are not accurate" when it comes to taxes. He referred to a crack the president made on Monday night as "Obama-loney," rhyming it with baloney.

At a fundraiser, Obama called Romney's tax plan Robin Hood in reverse ? "Romney Hood" ? and repeated his accusation that it would mean tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans while forcing the middle class to pay the IRS as much as $2,000 more a year.

The president wants to extend tax breaks due to expire at all income levels, except above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for a couple. He has made his proposal central to a pitch to middle- and working-class voters as he seeks a second term with unemployment at 8.3 percent.

Romney wants to keep the tax cuts in place at all income levels, and has proposed an additional 20 percent reduction in rates.

Romney's decision to introduce the welfare issue into the campaign seemed aimed at blue-collar, white working-class voters in a weak economy, and suggested that Obama might be gaining ground politically with his position on taxes.

It also marked an attempt to take the gloss off the recent announcement that former President Bill Clinton will have a prime-time speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. early next month.

Appearing before hundreds of supporters at a manufacturing plant near Chicago, Obama's hometown, the Republican challenger said bipartisan legislation signed into law by Clinton in 1996 "reformed welfare to encourage people to work. They did not want a culture of dependency to continue to grow in our country," he said of the then-president and Congress, under Republican control at the time.

He said that, just recently, Obama "has tried to reverse that accomplishment by taking the work requirement out of welfare. That is wrong, and If I'm president, I'll put work back in welfare. ...We will end a culture of dependency and restore a culture of good, hard work," he said.

Romney's new ad buttressed the point.

"Under Obama's plan you wouldn't have to work and wouldn't have to train for a job. They just send you a welfare check, and welfare to work goes back to being plan old welfare," the announcer says in the commercial.

"Mitt Romney will restore the work requirement."

Under the law signed by Clinton and amended a decade later, the federal government does not provide a guaranteed benefit to welfare recipients. Instead, the states receive federal funds and are permitted to establish a variety of programs to benefit the poor. The government imposes a limit on the length of time families can receive aid and requires recipients eventually to go to work.

The Romney campaign circulated material during the day that quoted Obama, then a state senator in Illinois, as saying he "probably would have voted against it" if he had been in Congress.

The Obama administration recently announced plans to issue waivers to states that wanted "to test alternative and innovative strategies, policies and procedures" to improve employment among needy families. It said it was acting after receiving requests from some of the nation's governors, including Republicans in Utah and Nevada. But senior GOP lawmakers attacked the move as an attempt to undermine the welfare-to-work requirements in effect for more than a decade.

Officials with access to detailed advertising information said it appeared the commercial was airing at heavy levels in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia ? states where the race is closest.

Romney was himself targeted with a new ad during the day, this one launched by Priorities USA Action, a super PAC that supports Obama.

It features a former Kansas City steelworker who says his company was taken over in 1993 by a group that included Bain Capital, the private equity firm co-founded by Romney.

"When Mitt Romney and Bain closed the plant, I lost my health care, and my family lost their health care," he said. His wife became ill, but "I think maybe she didn't say anything because she knew we couldn't afford the insurance," he says. By the time she went to the hospital, she was diagnosed with cancer and died quickly, he said.

"I do not think Mitt Romney realizes what he's done to anyone, and furthermore I do not think Mitt Romney is concerned."

In response, Ryan Williams, a spokesman for Romney, said Obama's allies "continue to use discredited and dishonest attacks in a contemptible effort to conceal the administration's deplorable economic record."

The timeline for Romney's role at Bain, the plant's closing and the woman's death raises questions about the legitimacy of linking the events.

Romney left Bain Capital in 1999 to lead preparations for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Although he retained his official standing as Bain's founder and chief executive until 2002, his campaign says he didn't have a managerial role. The plant closed in 2001 and the steelworker's wife died in 2006.

As the party conventions neared, Republicans and Democrats were fleshing out the speaking schedules for their gatherings.

Republicans said Romney's most persistent primary rival, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, would have a turn at the speaker's podium. So, too, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, a tea party favorite.

Former President Jimmy Carter will tape a video message to be aired in prime time at the Democratic convention.

Flying cameras to map Peru ruins

Archaeologists in Peru are getting ready to fly an unmanned craft that could radically speed up data gathering at historical sites.

Usually, "mapping" is an extremely time consuming process and can take several years to complete.

New technology developed by archaeologists and engineers from Vanderbilt University, in the US, should accelerate this process.

The device will be tested later this month at the Mawchu Llacta site.

By including cameras, Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies and programming specific flight algorithms to an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by Aurora Flight Sciences, Professors Julie Adams and Steven Wernke hope to three-dimensionally map the archaeological site.

Mapping is at the core of archaeological research?

End Quote Prof Steven Wernke Vanderbilt University

"To say anything about past societies?past social dynamics?we need to be able to place the material traces of past peoples in their fullest context possible. Mapping is therefore at the core of archaeological research," Prof Wernke told BBC News.

Mapping areas is often labour intensive and the site where the system will be tested would usually take about six months over several years to document.

The new UAV should enable the team to map the area in minutes, once the system is perfected.

The site will be a test of the UAV's flight capabilities.

"Mawchu Llacta is located at [a] high altitude of 4,100m (13,450ft), [making it] a good site for testing the upper altitude limits of current UAV technology," Prof Wernke said.

Archaeologically, mapping the area will help researchers understand the area, which was once the site of one of the largest forced resettlement programs in world history, as Spanish colonials moved 1.5 million native Andeans into planned towns in the 1570s.

"[The] urban and architectural planning were at the core of what the Spanish thought they were doing to 'civilize', convert, and subjugate the native Andean populace," he said.

Eye in the sky

In addition to enabling the researchers to quickly detail ancient landscape features, such as canals and roads, it will also allow 3D digital versions of the sites to be created.

These, aside from assisting the process of discovery, would enable the team to "virtually" preserve the site.

"Given the rate of looting and destruction of archaeological sites globally, it is also exciting as a means of recording a digital archival registry," co-developer Prof Julie Adams explained to BBC News.

Small enough to fit in a backpack, Professor Adams hopes the device would be able to be used by any researchers.

"We seek to provide capabilities that will allow the archaeologist, non-technically oriented individuals, to deploy the system on their own without technologists and engineers," she said.

Tom White, a researcher at Cambridge University, appreciated this aspect of the system.

"If you could just fly this thing, it'd be a cheap way of acquiring high-resolution aerial data," he told BBC News.

"It would be especially useful in those places that don't have the luxury of a map network like we have here [in the UK] thanks to the Ordnance survey and the Geological survey."

Animal control complaint mulled

Saturday August 4, 2012

POWNAL, Vt. -- The Select Board voted Thursday to table a complaint about Animal Control Officer Dominick Yarnal for two weeks, giving them time to research whether he is following state laws on boarding animals.

The board discussed a letter Thursday from the state Food Safety and Consumer Protection Division Animal Health Section, which said it recently received a complaint about Yarnal.

"The complaint stated that animals are not kept in proper enclosures, are able to escape when the enclosures are opened, are not provided with shade and protection from predators, are not properly provided with food and water, and are euthanized prior to the required holding period," wrote Shelly Mehlenbacher, assistant state veterinarian for the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets. The agency oversees the protection division.

Mehlenbacher provided the board with a list of statutes regarding municipal animal boarding and asked the board to look into the matter then contact the state if clarification is needed.

The letter came with a copy of one Yarnal had sent to the state. According to Yarnal's letter, the dogs are kept in dog houses on 10- to 15-foot chains. He said there is no fence, but he's willing to put one up if the board agrees. He said the animals are provided with adequate food and water and have access to shade from nearby trees.

"As far as euthanization, no dogs have been euthanized without the permission

of the [board]. The holding period is 14 days by statute, and after that if the dog is not claimed, it remains in my custody. We are on a waiting list with Second Chance Animal (shelter), but openings are far and few between," wrote Yarnal.

Board Chairman Stephen Kauppi said one or two board members should visit where Yarnal keeps animals and see what it's like before discussing the matter further.

Board member Ronald Bisson said he had heard complaints from a few people that they were having issues contacting Yarnal over the phone, and that should also be addressed.

Calls to Yarnal on Friday were not returned. Calls to the Animal Health Section also were not returned.

Yarnal was appointed animal control officer on Aug. 25, 2011.

According to board Administrative Assistant Linda Sciarappa, two dogs have been euthanized through the town.

As rover Curiosity lands, Mars exploration program fights for its life (+video)

The pinpoint landing of the rover Curiosity on Mars early Monday went as planned, to the jubilation of NASA scientists. But the budget for the Mars program is on the chopping block, as Washington grapples with debt and deficit.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / August 6, 2012

Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity team member Miguel San Martin, Chief Engineer, Guidance, Navigation, and Control at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, left, celebrates with Adam Steltzner, MSL entry, descent and landing (EDL) of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), right, after the successful landing of Curiosity rover on the surface of Mars at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., Sunday, Aug. 5.

Engineers and technicians behind NASA's Mars exploration program once again have turned in a performance worthy of a Michael Phelps: a gentle, pinpoint landing of a 1-ton, Mini Cooper-size rover named Curiosity on the surface of Mars.

John Blackstone reports.

The $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory mission ? with the heaviest, most capable robotic explorer ever to land on another planet ? aims to help determine whether Gale Crater and its central summit, informally known at Mt. Sharp, could have hosted life early in Mars' history.

After an eight-month trip covering some 352 million miles, the rover's unique self-guided landing system planted Curiosity's wheels firmly on Martian soil at 1:14 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the navigation team reported before handing the rover over to a new shift. It took another 14 minutes for the rover's "I'm here" signals to reach Earth.

The landing took place with pinpoint precision: Preliminary data show that the rocket-powered sky crane that lowered Curiosity to the surface on cables set the rover down slightly more than a mile from the base of Mt. Sharp, the ultimate destination scientists have placed on the rover's itinerary.?

"That's extraordinary," says Chuck Baker, one of the planners behind the craft's successful trip.

During a post-landing briefing early Monday morning, John Holdren, President Obama's science adviser, noted that "by any measure this was the most challenging mission ever attempted in the history of robotic planetary exploration.

"If anybody has been harboring doubts about the status of US leadership in space, well, there's a 1-ton, automobile-sized piece of American ingenuity, and it's sitting on the surface of Mars right now," he continued. "It certainly should put any such doubts to rest."

The success comes at a time when the US Mars exploration program is fighting for its life. The Obama administration sent a budget to Capitol Hill earlier this year that would cut funding for the program by 40 percent ? a level Scott Hubbard, the first director of the Mars exploration program and former head of NASA's Ames Research Laboratory, has called a "going out of business" budget.

NASA officials and planetary scientists have been meeting to see what sort of program they can salvage. Even if cuts end up less drastic than 40 percent, concerns over how to deal with the deficit and federal debt in Washington point to austere times ahead.

Talackova rides a wave of gratitude in Vancouver gay pride parade

VANCOUVER - Months after she took on the beauty pageant establishment, transgendered beauty queen Jenna Talackova helped lead Vancouver's annual gay pride parade Sunday.

The seemingly at-times-bashful Talackova rode atop a silver coloured BMW waving a rainbow feather boa over her head.

It was a scorcher as the parade wound through Vancouver streets in near 30 degree weather.

Talackova gained international attention for fighting for the right to compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant after being kicked out because she was not born a woman.

Talackova has said she always felt like a woman and began taking hormone therapy at 14 years old, eventually having sexual reassignment surgery at age 19.

She accused the pageant of discriminating against her and pageant owner Donald Trump allowed her to compete.

She finished in the top 12 in the pageant and now said she considers herself an advocate for equal rights.

Earlier this summer pride parade organizers said they chose her as a grand marshal because of her struggle for the rights of transgendered people.

Vancouver Canucks' player Manny Malhotra also made good on his promise to be the first Vancouver Canuck to ever take part in the city's decades old pride parade.

Malhotra was at the parade in association with the You Can Play project, an effort to bring acceptance of gay people into the world of athletics.

The Mississauga, Ontario native said he joined the effort because he believes people should not feel they cannot play sports based on their sexual orientation, religion or race.

The city's annual parade draws around 600,000 people.

For Colorado Family, It's Allergies All Around

FRIDAY, Aug. 3 (HealthDay News) -- Emily Kloser wasn't too concerned when her son's doctor first told her he had signs that pointed to a future with allergies.

What the Vail, Colo., mom didn't know at the time was just how serious those allergies would be.

Kloser's son, Christian, ended up developing life-threatening allergies to eggs, milk, soy, wheat, peanuts, seeds and tree nuts. The first significant sign of an allergy came the first time he had an egg and he broke out in hives.

"It was obvious that he had lots of food allergies," Kloser said. "He'd often have a runny nose and blotchy skin."

Once Kloser and her husband, Mike, learned just how many things Christian was allergic to, the real challenge began. "I had to relearn how to cook," Emily Kloser said. "I now read every label, every time. Even though you have a brand you trust, sometimes they change how they make things."

Because her son developed allergies at such a young age, Kloser said he didn't really know what he was missing and seemed to deal with it just fine. In fact, she said, when she'd make rice cereal treats for him to have at other children's birthday parties, the other children would often ask if they could have what Christian was having instead of the birthday cake.

At about age 5, she said, Christian outgrew his allergy to wheat, and a short time later he was able to eat eggs again. Around age 7 or 8, he was able to start drinking milk and eating dairy foods. Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the first foods he wanted to try was that ubiquitous kids' meal: pizza.

Now 18, he's still allergic to peanuts, seeds and tree nuts and, possibly, shellfish.

But just about the time Christian was outgrowing some of his allergies, his older sister Heidi had an allergic reaction after eating an avocado. Soon after that, they learned that she was also allergic to walnuts.

Both of the Kloser children are competitive skiers, and the family has traveled the world, despite the challenges of living with such serious food allergies. Emily Kloser said she learned to pack certain foods that her kids would need, and she learned how to ask about how foods were prepared in different languages so she'd be ready when they were away from the United States.

She said that living with the kids' food allergies "really made us all healthier" because it was easier to eat in than to eat at restaurants.

But it isn't always smooth sailing. Just a couple of years ago, Christian was traveling with a coach to a competitive ski event and was inadvertently exposed to something he was allergic to. They suspect it was a peanut exposure. He was back on the mountain, skiing downhill, when he started to feel badly. He didn't have antihistamine medication or an epinephrine injection with him to counteract his allergies, like he usually does, but his coach got him quickly to a hospital, though it took hours for Christian to get back to normal.

Still, Kloser said the family tries to live a normal life. "When I first found out, I sobbed," she said. "I wondered how he'd go to college, or even how he'd go to a friend's house. But you just have to educate the people your children come into contact with, and trust your children and the other adults in their lives. Have a plan and stick to the plan if something happens. But, don't get so in a panic over it that you start making your kid anxious."

Study: Blame blistering heat waves on global warming

Sue Ogrocki / AP

In this Sept. 30, 2011, file photo, sailboats and a floating dock lie on the dry, cracked dirt in a harbor at Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City as drought continues to be a problem across the state. The relentless type of heat that has blistered the U.S. and other parts of the world in recent years is due to man-made global warming, a new study from a top government scientist says.

By The Associated Press and NBC News staff

The relentless, weather-gone-crazy type of heat that has blistered the United States and other parts of the world in recent years is so rare that it can't be anything but man-made global warming, says a new statistical analysis from a top government scientist.

The research by a man often called the "godfather of global warming" says that the likelihood of such temperatures occurring from the 1950s through the 1980s was rarer than 1 in 300. Now, the odds are closer to 1 in 10, according to the study by NASA scientist James Hansen. He says that statistically what's happening is not random or normal, but pure and simple climate change.

"This is not some scientific theory. We are now experiencing scientific fact," Hansen told The Associated Press in an interview.

Hansen is a scientist at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York and a professor at Columbia University. He has called for government action to curb greenhouse gases for years. While his study was published online Saturday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, it is unlikely to sway opinion among the remaining climate change skeptics.

However, several climate scientists praised the new work.

In a departure from most climate research, Hansen's study ? based on statistics, not the more typical climate modeling ? blames these three heat waves purely on global warming:

?Last year's devastating Texas-Oklahoma drought.

?The 2010 heat waves in Russia and the Middle East, which led to thousands of deaths.

?The 2003 European heat wave blamed for tens of thousands of deaths, especially among the elderly in France.

The analysis was written before the current drought and record-breaking temperatures that have seared much of the United States this year. But Hansen believes this too is another prime example of global warming at its worst.

In an opinion column published Saturday in The Washington Post, Hansen said his predictions in the late 1980s of the dire consequences of steadily increasing temperatures have proven to be worse than he thought.

?Our analysis shows that it is no longer enough to say that global warming will increase the likelihood of extreme weather and to repeat the caveat that no individual weather event can be directly linked to climate change. To the contrary, our analysis shows that, for the extreme hot weather of the recent past, there is virtually no explanation other than climate change.

The deadly European heat wave of 2003, the fiery Russian heat wave of 2010 and catastrophic droughts in Texas and Oklahoma last year can each be attributed to climate change. And once the data are gathered in a few weeks? time, it?s likely that the same will be true for the extremely hot summer the United States is suffering through right now.

These weather events are not simply an example of what climate change could bring. They are caused by climate change. The odds that natural variability created these extremes are minuscule, vanishingly small. To count on those odds would be like quitting your job and playing the lottery every morning to pay the bills."

The new research makes the case for the severity of global warming in a different way than most scientific studies and uses simple math instead of relying on complex climate models or an understanding of atmospheric physics. It also doesn't bother with the usual caveats about individual weather events having numerous causes.

The increase in the chance of extreme heat, drought and heavy downpours in certain regions is so huge that scientists should stop hemming and hawing, Hansen said. "This is happening often enough, over a big enough area that people can see it happening," he said.

Scientists have generally responded that it's impossible to say whether single events are caused by global warming, because of the influence of natural weather variability.

However, that position has been shifting in recent months, as other studies too have concluded climate change is happening right before our eyes.

Hansen hopes his new study will shift people's thinking about climate change and goad governments into action. He wrote an op-ed piece that appeared online Friday in the Washington Post.

"There is still time to act and avoid a worsening climate, but we are wasting precious time," he wrote.

The science in Hansen's study is excellent "and reframes the question," said Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist at the University of Victoria in British Columbia who was a member of the Nobel Prize-winning international panel of climate scientists that issued a series of reports on global warming.

"Rather than say, 'Is this because of climate change?' That's the wrong question. What you can say is, 'How likely is this to have occurred with the absence of global warming?' It's so extraordinarily unlikely that it has to be due to global warming," Weaver said.

For years scientists have run complex computer models using combinations of various factors to see how likely a weather event would happen without global warming and with it. About 25 different aspects of climate change have been formally attributed to man-made greenhouse gases in dozens of formal studies. But these are generally broad and non-specific, such as more heat waves in some regions and heavy rainfall in others.

Another upcoming study by Kevin Trenberth, climate analysis chief at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, links the 2010 Russian heat wave to global warming by looking at the underlying weather that caused the heat wave. He called Hansen's paper an important one that helps communicate the problem.

But there is bound to be continued disagreement. Previous studies had been unable to link the two, and one by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration concluded that the Russian drought, which also led to devastating wildfires, was not related to global warming.

White House science adviser John Holdren praised the paper's findings in a statement. But he also said it is true that scientists can't blame single events on global warming: "This work, which finds that extremely hot summers are over 10 times more common than they used to be, reinforces many other lines of evidence showing that climate change is occurring and that it is harmful."

Skeptical scientist John Christy of the University of Alabama at Huntsville said Hansen shouldn't have compared recent years to the 1950s-1980s time period because he said that was a quiet time for extremes.

But Derek Arndt, director of climate monitoring for the federal government's National Climatic Data Center, said that range is a fair one and often used because it is the "golden era" for good statistics.

Granger Morgan, head of engineering and public policy at Carnegie Mellon University, called Hansen's study "an important next step in what I expect will be a growing set of statistically-based arguments."

In a landmark 1988 study, Hansen predicted that if greenhouse gas emissions continue, which they have, Washington, D.C., would have about nine days each year of 95 degrees or warmer in the decade of the 2010s. So far this year, with about four more weeks of summer, the city has had 23 days with 95 degrees or hotter temperatures.

Hansen says now he underestimated how bad things would get.

And while he hopes this will spur action including a tax on the burning of fossil fuels, which emit carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas, others doubt it.

Science policy expert Roger Pielke Jr. of the University of Colorado said Hansen clearly doesn't understand social science, thinking a study like his could spur action. Just because people understand a fact that doesn't mean people will act on it, he said.

In an email, he wrote: "Hansen is pursuing a deeply flawed model of policy change, one that will prove ineffectual and with its most lasting consequence a further politicization of climate science (if that is possible!)."

fragmentary/ruminant: rumination 6: beginnings of fatherhood

I was told with conviction that I would cry when my child was born, and I was told that parenting was an unalloyed joy. In my opinion, the people who say such things tend to have forgotten what it's like to be childless. I don't blame them. I've largely forgotten it myself. But my experiences were nothing like that. I felt lost at sea, and with good reason, too.

The transition to parenthood is a monumental thing, but not because of the ontological greatness of the transition, but because of how herculean the task really is. I know that the physical burdens of pregnancy are visited exclusively on the woman, but often the difficulties for the man are downplayed or ignored completely.

First, it is unfair to dismiss the difficulties of the man on the grounds that the woman simply suffers more. It's never been possible for me to watch my wife suffer and go about my affairs as if nothing were happening. Her pain has tremendous impact on her husband; she may be too ill, uncomfortable or in too much pain to notice, but it's still there. We have to be loving and supporting. We hold the bucket during morning sickness, and make dinner when the physical burdens become too much. We worry and fret while we're at work all day, hoping everything is going well at home. Many women find comfort in unloading their complaints on men, that too can be a burden. It feels as if all we do to help just isn't enough.

Second, there are some distinct advantages that women get during this transition. For women, the transition to parenthood is a far more gradual thing; they have the benefit of an intimate communication of kicks and motion for weeks before the baby's actual arrival. The husband gets the medical equivalent of a Rorschach test, and then a new baby is in his life, screaming. The suddenness is harsh, and there isn't really any solution to it. That's just the way pregnancy works. I'm sure it's fair for the woman to get the consolation of a relationship with the child beforehand, due to all the physical burdens she carries. Nevertheless, it's quite easy for the father to get left out of the loop. Even when he is included in some way (such as feeling kicks through the belly), it's not really a similar experience to that of the woman.

Third, while the woman is going through the physical hardships of pregnancy, there are mental rigors that (at least in my experience) wear down the man. For me, it was always worry about finances. I would spend all day with a calculator, worried sick about where the money would come from for this or that expense. It's possible that the worry is in part hormonal, possibly it's just stress. But for the most part, it's endured alone.

There is a balance to be struck in most things in life. I think it's true that man and woman work together to bring forth new life, and the pains of transition are different for both, but present for both.

When a woman is in travail she has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she is delivered of the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a child is born into the world. (John 16:21)
And for some, that joy will be immediately apparent. For others, though, there's a lot of growing into that joy. I have never been one to coo over newborn babies. By and large, they are a fragile, unresponsive and frightening lot. I'm always afraid I might hurt a newborn. The first night we brought our son home from the hospital, we were both scared out of our minds. What if we messed up? What if something mysterious and inexplicable happened? How would we know what to do? We put the child in his Moses basket and cowered in the corner, checking to make sure he was breathing every fifteen minutes and dreading the possibility that he might wake up.

As our son grew, so did we, I suppose. My definition of "good night's sleep" was changed forever. I started putting the baby to sleep in the evenings, singing to him and rocking him. I took my turns in the middle of the night, even as I do now, though less frequently. Teething was painful for the whole family. The fear faded quickly, leaving two adults run ragged by the new, tiny human in their care.

For me, joy has always worked the opposite of how it's popularly described. It's like like learning to ride a bike: working through the transitions and looking back to find your life enriched. When Sheila and I first got married, we honeymooned at her grandparents' cabin on the shores of Lake Wenatchee, Washington. We foolishly decided we were equal to the task of climbing the mountain across the lake, Mount Dirtyface. three thousand feet and six hours later, we were on top of the mountain. It was a wonderful experience, though afterwards I was as sore as I've ever been. I've never experienced true joy as a wave of euphoria or an emotional pang. I've experienced it as I did that mountain climb: an awareness of accomplishment and acknowledgment of gift.

I truly started to feel the joy of my son when he was about three months old. Children become more interactive at that age, with big smiles and vocal noises. Since then, I feel I've really grown into parenting. I get along quite well with my younger son, and the older and I are fast friends. I can't imagine what my life would be like without them. But it's worth stating, in case any fathers-to-be are reading, that it's not instant, and it's quite difficult. It's worth the wait, but it takes a true and permanent adjustment.

I think the permanence of the adjustment is the hardest aspect. Men get attached to doing things their way. It's easy to feel resentful of the tiny creature that came into your life with the iron fist of tyranny. Nothing is fair anymore. If you had a bad day at work, you can't go home and lick your wounds. You have to go home and be the moon and the stars for your child. If you have a fever, you still have to get the baby into the high-chair and get him food. You can't break down, because you have to comfort the child when he breaks down. That might be why our culture has a fatherhood problem. Either you grow, or you quit. There's no middle way.

It's a mystery to me how anybody does it. If I stop and think about it, it's still a mystery to me how I do it. Fortunately, I never really have the time to stop and think it through. It makes no sense: in some cosmic way, it appears that the anguish of the transition gives rise to joy. That's like saying big shoes cause big feet. But it's still true.

Strategies On How To Improve Your Relationship With Money ...

Finances can be scary, but money is a daily essential. This article contains advice which will help you to regain control of your finances.

Once you are aware of exactly how much you receive and what you are spending it on, you can work out a budget. Begin by calculating how much income you receive, while taking taxes into consideration. Make certain you add in all sources of income, such as wages from a second job, income from rental property, etc. Understanding your income versus expenditures will help you to truly evaluate if you are spending too much. To be clear, if you are spending more than you are bringing in, you are spending too much.

You need to see where your expenses are by making a list. Make sure you take into account everything that you are paying for, including your car (and insurance), recreational activities and all the food that you purchase. Be sure to verify the content of the list.

With an idea of how much your household brings in and spends each month, you need to make a working budget. Remove unnecessary expenditures from your budget. For instance, cut out fast food if you buy it regularly.

To decrease your utility bills, upgrade the systems that you are using. Installing a modern, energy-efficient water heater and making sure your windows are properly sealed from the elements, are two ways to lower your energy usage. Hot water heaters that heat water as it is being used are better than those that heat prior to use. To lower a water bill, check for any leaky pipes, and have a plumber come out and fix any that you find. Be sure to only use your dishwasher when it is full.

Update your appliances to energy-efficient versions. This may seem costly, but it saves money over time. Unplug the electrical cords from any appliances or electronics that are not being used. Before long, your reduced energy consumption will be apparent in your reduced energy bills.

To make sure that you are not losing heat because of your roof or insulation, upgrade these areas, especially if this is something that you have not done in a long time. You will definitely get a return for your investment with this upgrade.

The advice in this article can help you save money, and keep more of your income. Spend the money you have saved on home improvement projects on new appliances you need. In this way you can elevate your standard of living and also take more control over your finances.

NASA Awards $1.1 Billion in Support for 3 Private Space Taxis

NASA revealed new agreements with three private spaceflight companies today (Aug. 3), deals that total $1.1 billion in funding support for new commercial spaceships to launch American astronauts into space.

The new deals represent the final round of NASA's?Commercial Crew integrated Capability program??(CCiCap), which aims to foster the design and development of new private spaceships to fill the current gap in U.S. human spaceflight capabilities.

The selected companies are:

  • Sierra Nevada Corporation, headquartered in Louisville, Colo.
  • Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), headquartered in Hawthorne, Calif.
  • The Boeing Company, headquartered in Houston

As part of the new agreements, Sierra Nevada will receive $212.5 million, SpaceX will receive $440 million, and Boeing will receive $460 million. Boeing and SpaceX are developing private space capsules, with Sierra Nevada taking a different path with its winged Dream Chaser space plane design.

"Today, we are announcing another critical step toward launching our astronauts from U.S. soil on space systems built by American companies," NASA chief Charles Bolden said in a statement. "We have selected three companies that will help keep us on track to end the outsourcing of human spaceflight and create high-paying jobs in Florida and elsewhere across the country." [Now Boarding: The Top 10 Private Spaceships]

Not included in the list is Blue Origin of Kent., Wash., a company owned by Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos that is building private spacecraft for suborbital and orbital flights. The company did receive NASA support for its orbital crew vehicle in the space agency's previous funding round.

NASA retired its 30-year?space shuttle program?last year and is currently dependent on Russian spacecraft to ferry Americans to the International Space Station. Once commercial spaceships are proven to be safe and reliable, NASA intends to purchase flights for astronauts to and from the space station.

Between now and May 31, 2014, the companies funded under the CCiCap agreements will further develop and test their spacecraft designs. Following the successful completion of these milestones, crewed orbital demonstration to low-Earth orbit will proceed by the middle of the decade, NASA officials said.

"For 50 years American industry has helped NASA push boundaries enabling us to live, work and learn in the unique environment of microgravity and low Earth orbit," William Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for human exploration and operations at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., said in a statement. "The benefits to humanity from these endeavors are incalculable. We're counting on the creativity of industry to provide the next generation of transportation to low Earth orbit and expand human presence, making space accessible and open for business."'

NASA, in the meantime, is focusing on the development of a new heavy-lift rocket, called the Space Launch System, and a space capsule, called Orion, for exploration missions beyond low-Earth orbit. The agency has the goal of exploring a near-Earth asteroid by 2025 and on to Mars by the 2030s.

Wall Street jumps after payrolls data

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street stocks rallied on Friday after employers hired more workers than expected last month, putting the S&P 500 on track to recover all of the losses posted during its recent four-day losing streak.

Data showed employers in July hired 163,000 workers, the most in five months and above expectations calling for an increase of 100,000 jobs. But an increase in the jobless rate to 8.3 percent clouds the picture of what the Federal Reserve will do about additional monetary stimulus.

The S&P 500 index had fallen more than 1.5 percent this week before Friday's advance as investor hopes for further stimulus measures from the European Central Bank and U.S. Federal Reserve were dampened and a trading error at market maker Knight Capital Group Inc on Wednesday dealt another blow to confidence in market structure.

"After everything that has been going on with Europe and central banker disappointment the markets were priced for disappointment and anything above a disappointment would get a positive response - but this number isn't good enough to fix the economic problem that we are in," said Ron Florance, managing director of investment strategy for Wells Fargo Private Bank based in Scottsdale, Arizona.

"You'll need an excuse to fall off the top of trading range and bounce off the bottom - it's a nice way to end a week of turmoil."

The S&P 500 decline came after the benchmark index saw its best two-day run of the year to close out the prior week as ECB President Mario Draghi heightened expectations for more immediate action to contain the euro zone debt crisis when he pledged to do "whatever it takes" to save the euro. But on Thursday, he dashed hopes for quick rescue measures.

Knight Capital shares surged 20.2 percent to $3.10 in volatile trade after the Wall Street Journal reported the market maker has told brokers that it has obtained a line of credit, which will allow it to operate for the day. The company is fighting for survival after a $440 million trading loss caused by a software glitch wiped out much of its capital.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> gained 217.40 points, or 1.69 percent, to 13,096.28. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> gained 24.75 points, or 1.81 percent, to 1,389.75. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> gained 55.36 points, or 1.90 percent, to 2,965.13.

Other data showed the pace of growth in the vast U.S. services sector edged up in July to 52.6 versus the 52.1 reading in June and above analyst expectations for a reading of 52.

Dow component Procter & Gamble Co advanced 2.6 percent to $65.17 after the world's largest household products maker posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit and said it would repurchase $4 billion worth of its shares this fiscal year.

LinkedIn Corp jumped 14.3 percent to $106.87 after the professional networking site reported higher-than-expected revenue and raised its full-year outlook as it pocketed more money from subscribers, services aimed at businesses and advertising.

NYSE Euronext said new strategies and cost cuts should help the trans-Atlantic exchange return to growth next year after losses in its three main business lines forced quarterly income down a fifth. Shares advanced 2 percent to $25.08.

According to Thomson Reuters data though Friday morning, of the 405 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported results, 67.7 percent have reported earnings above analyst expectations. Over the past four quarters, 68 percent of companies beat estimates.
