Spain aid package would weigh heavily: Italy Finance Minister

MILAN (Reuters) - A 100 billion euro aid request from Spain to its euro zone partners would shave 1.5 percent off Italy's economic output, the finance minister in Rome was quoted as saying on Monday.

Spain, which has already obtained a lifeline worth that much for its struggling banking sector, could seek a sovereign rescue next month, euro zone officials told Reuters on Saturday.

If that happened, "Italy would bear the brunt of the cost," Vittorio Grilli said in an interview with daily La Repubblica, pointing out that Italy's public debt had already gone up by 4 percent as a consequence of European Union aid given to Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

"If Spain were to obtain aid for no less than 100 billion euros, the Italian share would be equivalent of another 1.5 percent of gross domestic product."

Italy needed to be generous in such circumstances, but also carefully assess the impact on its public finances.

Rome expects Madrid to apply for aid given the worsening of Spain's deficit and its banking crisis, the newspaper said.

Spain is considering asking for a rescue package but wants to know more about its conditions and scope before applying. Doing so would calm financial markets, Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Friday.

Spain is the main focus of investor concerns over the euro zone debt crisis but Italy, with a huge public debt and the European Union's slowest average economic growth rate, is seen as the next weakest link.

The two countries' sovereign debt yields have tracked each other for months, albeit with Spain's borrowing costs consistently higher.

The Italian government was also cautious with regards to a possible decision of allowing more time for Greece to hit its deficit-reduction targets, the paper said, without quoting Grilli directly.

That stance would put Italy in the same camp as Germany with regard to Greece, which is locked in talks with lenders on a further set of reforms in exchange for the new loan tranche it needs to stave off bankruptcy.

In the interview, Grilli reiterated that Italy was not planning to ask for any kind of euro zone aid.

"The country's finances are solid. In 2013 we will meet the goal of a balanced budget adjusted for the (economic) cycle. And this without aid of any sort," Grilli said.

Football (soccer) scores a health hat trick for hypertensive men

ScienceDaily (Oct. 15, 2012) ? Playing football (soccer) could be the best way for people with high blood pressure, known as hypertension, to improve their fitness, normalise their blood pressure and reduce their risk of stroke, according to research published today (Oct. 15, 2012) in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

Research from Universities of Exeter and Copenhagen, and Gentofte University Hospital in Denmark suggests football training prevents cardiovascular disease in middle-aged men with hypertension and is more effective than healthy lifestyle advice currently prescribed by GPs.

After six months of football training, three out of four men in this study had blood pressure within the normal, healthy range.

Almost one third of British men have hypertension, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases including stroke and coronary artery disease. It has long been known that physical exercise can reduce blood pressure in patients with hypertension, but until now little evidence is available on which form of exercise is most effective.

The research team recruited 33 men aged between 33 and 54 with mild to moderate hypertension. They randomly divided them in two groups: one took part in two hour-long football training sessions a week while the other received usual care by a GP including advice about the importance of physical activity and a healthy diet, together with control blood pressure measurements. The effects on exercise capacity, maximal oxygen uptake, body fat and blood pressure, were monitored after three months and at the end of the six-month trial.

For the football-playing group, average mean blood pressure was reduced by 10 mmHg, while the reduction was only 5 mmHg in the control group receiving the usual GP advice. For the football group, maximal oxygen uptake and maximal exercise capacity was improved by10 per cent, resting heart rate decreased by eight beats per minute and body fat mass dropped by an average of two kilograms. No significant changes to these health measures were observed in the control group.

The men who had taken part in soccer training were also found to be less physically strained during moderate intensity exercise. When taking part in activities such as cycling, they had markedly lower heart rates and elevated fat burning.

Lead researcher Professor Peter Krustrup of the University of Exeter said: "Playing football scores a hat trick for men with hypertension: it reduces blood pressure, improves fitness and burns fat. Only two hour-long football training sessions a week for six months caused a remarkable 13/8 mmHg in arterial blood pressure, with three out of four participants normalising their blood pressure during the study period.

"The football training also boosted the aerobic fitness and resulted in marked improvements in both maximal and moderate exercise capacity. Playing football made it easier for previously untrained men to train even harder, and also make it easier for them to cope with everyday life activities such as cycling, walking upstairs, shopping and lawn mowing."

Professor Peter Krustrup concludes: "Although our previous research has highlighted the many health benefits of playing football, this is the first evidence that football may contribute fundamentally to prevention of cardiovascular disease in hypertensive men."

Senior cardiologist from Gentofte University Hospital in Denmark, Peter Riis Hansen, also emphasised that evidence suggests that the decrease in blood pressure after football training lead to a considerable reduction in the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction and death. He said: "Our results are very exciting and we are now trying to understand the findings in more depth, for example by investigating the effects of playing football on the heart's structure and function.

"Recent studies from our research group have also shown positive effects of football training on the blood pressure and heart in premenopausal women with normal blood pressure and we are now aiming to test the effects of football in women with hypertension."

The study was funded by the Danish Heart Foundation (Hjerteforeningen), FIFA -- Medical Assessment and Research Centre (F-MARC), Nordea-fonden, the Danish Football (Soccer) Association (Dansk Boldspil-Union) and the Sports Confederation of Denmark (Danmarks Idr?ts-Forbund).

Casual Borderlands RP

Just looking for anyone interested in a Borderlands Roleplay. It would probably be set after Borderlands 2, or Run parallel to it. I prefer well-developed characters that would fit in the universe, but I actually like short posts. I prefer not having to read a 300 posts of novel-length text every time I log on. Anyway, if anyone is interested in joining or co-gming, drop a post here, or shoot me a PM. Thanks!

by: jerroldcor45 - October 13th, 2012

If you are thinking exactly what a virtual assistant, or VA can do for you, you?ll discover that the solution is ?a lot .? Digital co-workers are independent entrepreneurs that may provide professional technical and administrative assistance, and even creative or social services for their clients. The special mark of an a person is that he or she operates from the home business, using Internet and the phone as means of communication. When you hire an a person you could assign daily tasks that have to be performed, so that you?ll have more hours to handle your organization. Be they long-term or short-term projects, the tasks that you opt to delegate to your electronic associate may include a broad range of services and this only is dependent upon what you need and the skills of the person you hire. Although they won?t become your workers, he or she will still need to perform just like one.A bilingual or multilingual VA is an one who masters two or much more foreign languages. If your business must do business in a foreign nation, this really is very valuable. Once she or he?s become familiar with the procedures in your organization, your VA can use his or her mother tongue or a language she or he masters to talk with your foreign customers. The list of jobs that can be delegated to a VA can be quite long, but here are a few of the most frequent types:Administrative Tasks For Your Virtual AssistantOrganizing and managing your correspondence or email campaigns that improve your business. Whenever it is necessary.Or perhaps you need vacation arrangements, calendar management, research, knowledge access, transcription you VA could control the database along with your customers or services you provide, enter new reports, information and revise it. They are common projects you may ask your personal assistant to do. Every other administrative services that you consider important but do not have sufficient time and energy to deal with, you could assign to your VA. Bilingual or multilingual virtual assistants could manage all such jobs in the foreign languages they are efficient with. This allows you more time to deal with more important tasks. All you need is the computer, an Internet connection and probably a phone to be forever in touch with your VA.Marketing Tasks Your Virtual Assistant Can PerformThere are experts that supply online assistance companies that specialize in Internet and social networking marketing. This means you can employ them to create marketing with articles plans and pr release. Skillful VAs can be also asked by you to boost the SEO for your site and offer suggestions about how to expand your organization through Online marketing techniques. You?ll find VAs that could use social media to generate new leads for the organization. Creating a business website, establishing an appealing Facebook page, Twitter plans or every other cutting-edge social networking tools can be responsibilities to delegate to your VA.VAs Offer Customer ServicesWhen you are interested in obtaining customers global, a multilingual or bilingual virtual assistant is an important companion who can communicate with your clients who talk the languages the VA is fluent in. Your VA can interact with your prospects and customers inside their native language and this process can boost your business.Multilingual Virtual Assistant Can Also Handle Translation TasksIf you need to read your site, articles, Powerpoint presentations or press announcements in the language of the country you are thinking about, you can ask your electronic secretary to take care of these tasks. Obviously, you will find unit translations but everybody knows that their effectiveness is not yet adequate. Human translation can not be changed however. For this reason if you deal with foreign clients, hiring a multilingual or bilingual online assistant is the greatest choice. Being more associated with your day to day operations, he/she can do a better job than the usual certified translator. Authorized translators frequently cost more, so this might mean you can save your self money.International Search Engine Optimization and Internet Marketing Performed By VAsA bilingual or perhaps a multilingual personal helper can assist you with not just converting your website but in addition with optimizing it so that search engines can rank it higher. You can find the proper person if you look for multilingual electronic helpers to execute SEO for the qualified languages. An indigenous speaker can better know which keywords are related inside their place, so the translation can be more appropriate and culturally adjusted to the crowd it is designed for. Sites such as Google or Bing will favor your site when you yourself have executed International SEO with your associate help. These individuals can be your partners, not just your employees and the reliable and cost-effective solution of hiring them will translate into better results for your organization. Outsourcing your schedule tasks to a VA, will enable you to focus on more important operations of one?s primary business, so that your production will increase.

'Taken 2' proves unstoppable at box office

By Pamela McClintock, The Hollywood Reporter

Box office revenues soared 58 percent over a year ago thanks to a handful of films that overperformed, led by Liam Neeson action pic "Taken 2" and Ben Affleck's awards darling "Argo."

From 20th Century Fox and EuropaCorp, "Taken 2" grossed $22.5 million from 3,706 theaters in its second weekend to stay at No. 1. An unqualified hit, the pic has now earned $86.8 million domestically and $132.8 million internationally for a worldwide total of $220 million -- just shy of the $226.8 million earned by the first "Taken" in its entire run.

STORY: THR Cover: Confessions of Ben Affleck

"Argo," from Warner Bros., grossed a strong $20.1 million from 3,232 locations in its debut to easily take the No. 2 spot. The critically acclaimed film surged 47 percent from Friday to Saturday as moviegoers flocked to see the period political thriller, about the rescue of six Americans during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis.

Affleck both directed and stars in the $44 million film, which received a glowing A+ CinemaScore, guaranteeing a long run for the film throughout awards season.

The movie's opening weekend was fueled by older moviegoers -- 93 percent of the audience was over the age of 25, and 52 percent over the age of 50 -- but Warners is confident the audience will expand. In terms of gender, 54 percent were females.

"Good movies rise to the occasion. Both 'The Town' (also directed by Affleck) and 'Gran Torino' played older initially and then turned into four-quadrant movies," Warners president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said.

Based on the true story of the rescue of six Americans hiding out at the Canadian Embassy during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, "Argo" also headlines Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin and John Goodman. The film chronicles how the Americans were able to escape Iran after the CIA and specialist Tony Mendez, played by Affleck, staged a fake movie production as a cover.

GK Films and Smokehouse, George Clooney and Grant Heslov's former production company, produced "Argo."

Summit Entertainment's pre-Halloween pic "Sinister" also overperformed, taking the No. 3 spot with $18.3 million from 2,527 theaters. The pic is the most profitable of the weekend, considering it cost under $3 million to make.

The R-rated "Sinister" marks another victory for uber horror producer Jason Blum and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones' Automatik, a joint venture between IM Global and Alliance. They produced alongside the film's writer and director, Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism of Emily Rose"). The film stars Ethan Hawke as a true-crime writer whose family is plunged into danger after he finds a box of gruesome home movies.

"Whenever you overperform industry expectations, it's always a nice thing," Lionsgate executive president of distribution David Spitz.

Sinister, receiving a C+ CinemaScore, common for a horror film, skewed slightly male (54 percent), while two-thirds of the audience was between the ages of 18 and 34.

Sony's animated hit "Hotel Transylvania" showed no signs of slowing down in its third weekend as it jumped the $100 million mark, grossing $17.3 million to come in No. 4. The film's domestic cume is $102.2 million; internationally, it's also overperforming and has grossed $49.3 million through Sunday from a total of 24 markets.

"'Hotel Transylvania' is performing beyond anyone's imagination, and the holds are ridiculous. It exceeds expectations in every new market it opens in," Sony president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer said.

"Hotel Transylvania" even beat new Sony family comedy "Here Comes the Boom," starring Kevin James (also a voice lead in "Hotel Transylvania") and Salma Hayek. The pic, produced by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison, grossed a soft $12 million from 3,014 theaters to place No. 5. The film did receive an A CinemaScore.

CBS Films' dark comedy "Seven Psychopaths," only opening in 1,480 locations, slightly underperformed in grossing $4.3 million to place No. 9. A favorite on the festival circuit, the pic stars?Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Christopher Walken and Abbie Cornish.

Saturday's live broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera's "L'Elisir d'Amore" placed No. 10 with $2.3 million from 900 theaters. The broadcast kicks off the seventh season of "The Met: Live in HD" program.

Summit's specialty pic "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" placed No. 11 as it expanded into a total of 726 theaters, grossing $2.2 million for a pleasing cume of $6.2 million.

Conservative offering "Atlas Shrugged: Part II" came in No. 12 in its debut, grossing $1.7 million from 1,071 theaters.

Global Leadership Conference 2012: Insights and Takeaways ...

Some fascinating insights at the Global Leadership Conference at the Ronald Reagan Building today from corporate and diplomatic leaders, Jay Johnson, Chairman and CEO of General Dynamics, Frederick Smith, the CEO of FedEX, Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO of Gallup, David Rubinstein of the Carlyle Group, the Ambassador of India Her Excellency, Nirupama Rao, and His Excellency Yousef Al Otaiba, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates. The Summit was sponsored by the Meridian International Center in partnership with Gallup and the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

The takeaway: The world will not remain the same as it has been. According to General Dynamics CEO Jay Johnson , in coming decades, change will be the only constant and the United States cannot afford to be isolated if it wants to remain a major player on the world stage but must continue to collaborate with other countries in order to remain competitive in a globalized world threatened by pandemics, terrorism and climate change. Leadership, said the former naval commander, must be based on achieving positive outcomes, not war. Instead of individual navies patrolling the seas, Johnson, himself an Admiral, forsees a network of maritime partners around the world which would collaborate to achieve maritime security.

Gallup, no longer simply conducts polls to determine the winners of US elections, but now has 40 offices worldwide which work to predict the rise and fall of leaders and countries. Said Jim Clifton, Gallup CEO, World trade is now at $60 Trillion but according to economists, will rise to $140 trillion in the next three decades. Which countries will rise? Follow the money. The answer as to which countries will succeed he says, is where the $140 trillion goes. Gallup finds that the most important predictor of economic success or failure of a nation/state is the state of mind and the will of their populations. The best way to predict a rise or loss of GDP and who will rise and fall in the future is hope, whether a country is struggling and crashing, or hopeful and thriving. Tunisia?s GDP, for example may be up 5-6% but the Tunisians? sense of ?thriving? is crashing. Clifton said leaders will rise or fall based on their understanding of the wills of their people. For example, Rwanda may not be the safest place on earth, but Rwandans? state of mind is that it is safe. Why? ?Because it?s better than it used to be. ? In Ethiopia women used to worry about walking to market out of fear of being raped, but since the authorities established law and order, women feel safe, can go to market and GDP has risen. What used to drive the American dream has also changed Clifton said. For almost the last century the American Dream has been based on peace and having a good roof over one?s head. Now he says the American Dream is based on having a ?good job.? All decisions people now make is based on jobs.

What the entire global population, not just the US population, wants right now, said Clifton, is job growth, food and shelter and law and order. The global population is now at 7 billion adults. Three billion of them want good jobs. They don?t want ?informal jobs,? but rather full time 30 hr/week jobs. But there are only 2 billion real jobs in the world, so more jobs need to be created.

Grievances with C;

I have to tell you NOT do do something?!? That's stupid. I'm the programmer, I tell you what to do.
"VOID" SETUP or "VOID" LOOP? I'll tell you what C, if I want you to bring me back a value, I, will tell YOU, to bring me back a value. Don't go doing stuff on your own!

INT, integer, really?!? The last time I paid attention to math class was fifth grade. Call it "name" or "address" or anything better than "InTEger". You might as well just write the language in Greek.

C++ doesn't "do something on its own", the return type is required. "Void" is specific and helps avoid ambiguity.

How is "name" or "address" better than "int"? If "int" is "name" then what is "float"? What is "long"? Addresses are pointers, they are not integers.

It seems to me you have a grievance with C++'s level of control, while complaining about the lack of it.

If you have a problem with integers, go back to math class.

It's not actually C's fault.

Here's my problem, I purchased an arduino for my students, highschool, I'm a student teacher. I want to introduce the students to electronics and the programming process in the hopes that they can build things on their own, and have some ownership and pride. So the arduino uses C for the programs.

I don't really understand c that well but my students are having an even tougher time. The sad thing is, they get the board, the get the pin outs, it's that language that is tripping them up. I was told arduino is for "lay people."

Friday, I came in and I told the students to forget everything I tried to explain to them, "Integer is just a way of 'naming' a pin or a piece of information... And the Arduino's language is stupid, you have to tell it NOT to do something, that's why you write VOID in front of setup or loop, otherwise it's gonna search for some address or value". The kids got it. They started making stuff on their own or adapting projects.

I wish there was a language that was better for lay people, that was written in not percise technical terms that are accurate, but rather are in simple and conventional phrases. The phrases that C has that are more conventional such as SETUP, the kids got that. So it's not really C's, fault, it was designed for another purpose.

Manny Pacquiao's extension with Top Rank ? Boxing News | bettor ...

Manny Pacquiao?s extension with Top Rank ? Boxing News

According to a report published by Fight Hype, Filipino fight sensation Manny Pacquiao has signed an extension with Top Rank. Moreover, as per the report, part of the deal is that Pacquiao will face WBC welterweight titlist Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year.

?According to an eyewitnesses on the scene, Dena duBoef, Vice President of Marketing and the daughter of Bob Arum, escorted Pacquiao to a private room where he had a closed-door meeting with Arum, Koncz, and 50 Cent,? read the report. ?It's unclear as to exactly what was discussed, however, our source strongly believes that Pacquiao was given a verbal guarantee that, with the help of 50 Cent and Tommy Smalls, an April fight with Floyd Mayweather would indeed take place, convincing Pacquiao to sign the contract extension.?

Another source for the same added, ?He thinks he has that fight coming, but that fight isn't ever going to happen.?

For some reason, the fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather never happens. Even though Pacquiao has always been interested in facing the unbeaten American fighter, the latter always has issues with it.

In the very beginning, when the idea was born, Mayweather asked Pacquiao to go for random drug testing but the Filipino declined, claiming it was an embarrassment for him to prove he is not on drugs. Earlier this year, Pacquiao and Mayweather were in direct contact with each other, as Mayweather blamed Bob Arum, Top Rank?s promoter, for not being able to set the fight.

Mayweather asked Pacquiao to settle for a flat fee while he would keep the entire pay-per-view for the event. Again, for the Filipino, it was an embarrassing deal, since he believes both fighters are of the same calibre and he wants equal share.

Now, Pacquiao wants the fight more than anything, as he is on the verge of retirement. Fans have been demanding the fight for quite some time, and Pacquiao wants to give it to them before he leaves the sport. The Filipino has previously stated that even his 11-year-old son wants him to clash with the unbeaten American before he hangs up his gloves.

(AP) ? Four years ago, the vice presidential debate featured the old Senate pro, Joe Biden, against a newcomer to national politics, Sarah Palin.

Thursday night's debate again includes Biden, now the incumbent Democratic vice president. But this time he's against Republican House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

Palin's folksy style won many conservative fans. Ryan, in contrast, is known for his wonkiness and his proposal to offer future seniors a choice of medical plans.

The constant is Biden, a man prone to gaffes, but possessing encyclopedic knowledge of foreign and domestic affairs.

In a question and answer format, here's what to look for Thursday night.

Q. Who opens and closes?

A. Biden gets the first question. Ryan gets the last word in his closing statement. Viewers won't have to wait long to hear the candidates' answers to debate questions: There are no opening statements.

Q. How long are the debates?

A. Ninety minutes. Each debate begins at 9 p.m. EDT and ends at 10:30 p.m. What if the candidates blow through so many stop signs that 10:30 approaches without covering many planned topics? Too bad. Unless plans are totally upset, airtime ends at 10:30 p.m.

Q. The first of three presidential debates focused on the economy. Will the VP debate have just one topic?

Q. No. There is only one vice presidential debate. While it was tough enough to control the time for only domestic issues in the first presidential debate, this one will have to cover foreign and domestic subjects.

Q. Who will moderate the debate?

A. Martha Raddatz, senior foreign affairs correspondent for ABC News.

Q. How is the time divided?

A. The time will be divided into 10 segments on separate topics. A vigorous debate might preclude the moderator from getting to all of them. Each candidate gets two minutes to respond to a question, followed by a discussion. The two-minute time limits may be generally enforced, but the discussions will keep going until each candidate exhausts the points he wants to make.

Q. Did the Commission on Presidential Debates, which runs the show, make changes as a result of the lengthy discussions in the first debate?

A. No, the commission actually liked the freewheeling debate that often rolled through moderator Jim Lehrer's attempts to move on. Peter Eyre, senior adviser to the commission, said: "The goal is to allow candidates to engage as much as possible. That was exactly what we were looking for when we put the format together."

Q. President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney stood at lecterns. Will Biden and Ryan do the same?

A. No. They will sit at a table shaped like a half moon.

Q. Where is the debate being held?

A. Centre College, Danville, Ky. The commission removed the orchestra pit at the college theater and assembled its own stage from components trucked in from commission headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Q. Who picks the questions?

A. The moderator.

Q. Who runs the commission?

A. The Commission on Presidential Debates was established in 1987. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, tax-exempt corporation that has sponsored presidential debates since 1988. The co-chairs are Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr., a former Republican National Committee chairman, and Michael McCurry, a former White House press secretary for Bill Clinton.

Q. Is Raddatz the first woman to moderate a vice presidential debate?

A. No. PBS' Gwen Ifill moderated the vice presidential debates in the past in 2004 and 2008.

U.S. court clears Samsung phone, hands Apple setback

WASHINGTON/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court overturned a pretrial sales ban against Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Galaxy Nexus smartphone, dealing a setback to Apple Inc in its battle against Google Inc's increasingly popular mobile software.

Apple is waging war on several fronts against Google, whose Android software powers many of Samsung's devices.

The ruling on Thursday from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is not expected to have an outsized impact on the smartphone market, as the Nexus is an aging product in Samsung's lineup. Apple's stock closed down nearly 2 percent at $628.10.

However, the court's reasoning could make it much harder for companies that sue over patents get competitors' products pulled from the market, said Colleen Chien, a professor at Santa Clara Law school in Silicon Valley.

Such sales injunctions have been a key for companies trying to increase their leverage in courtroom patent fights.

"The Federal Circuit has said, 'Wait a minute,'" Chien said.

Apple declined to comment, while Samsung did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Apple scored a sweeping legal victory over Samsung in August when a U.S. jury found Samsung had copied critical features of the hugely popular iPhone and iPad and awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages.

The Nexus phone was not included in that trial, but is part of a tandem case Apple filed against Samsung earlier this year.

District Judge Lucy Koh issued a pretrial injunction against the Nexus in June, based on an Apple patent for unified search capability. The appeals court then stayed that injunction until it could formally rule.

In its opinion on Thursday, the Federal Circuit reversed the injunction entirely, saying that Koh abused her discretion.

Apple failed to prove that consumers purchased the Samsung product because of the infringing technology, the appeals court ruled.

"It may very well be that the accused product would sell almost as well without incorporating the patented feature," the court wrote. "And in that case, even if the competitive injury that results from selling the accused device is substantial, the harm that flows from the alleged infringement (the only harm that should count) is not."

The court considered a single patent - one which allows the smartphone to search multiple data storage locations at once. For example, the smartphone could search the device's memory as well as the Internet with a single query.

The appeals court has sent the case back to Koh for reconsideration. A separate pretrial sales ban Apple had managed to win against Samsung - targeting the Galaxy Tab 10.1 - was dissolved earlier this month after Samsung won at trial on that patent.

Beyond the Nexus, Samsung also has a collection of new tablets and smartphones intended for launch before the holidays.

On Wednesday, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt called the intensifying struggle between Apple and his company a "defining fight" for the future of the mobile industry.

The case in the Federal Circuit is Apple Inc vs. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al., 12-1507.

Japan to provide Myanmar loans to pay off ADB, World Bank debt ...

Japan will provide loans to Myanmar to help it repay debt to the Asian Development Bank and World Bank starting early next year, Finance Minister Koriki Jojima said.

?Japan welcomes that the World Bank and Asian Development Bank will be in a position to clear? their loans, Jojima said today at a meeting between Myanmar and its creditors in Tokyo as part of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank?s annual meeting. The bridge loans will come from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, a state-backed lender.

The settlement deal follows an April debt forgiveness plan as Japan, Myanmar?s biggest creditor, re-engages with the Southeast Asian nation that is shifting toward democracy after five decades of military dictatorship. Japan will start implementing the plan in January, paving the way to provide infrastructure loans to the country next year, Jojima said.

The Asian Development Bank and the World Bank signalled their intention to start clearing Myanmar?s debt, according to a Japanese Finance Ministry statement after the conference. JBIC?s bridge loans will cover the lenders? combined overdue debt of about $900 million, Vice Finance Minister for International Affairs Takehiko Nakao said at a briefing.

The ADB and the World Bank are in talks with the Myanmar government about debt settlement, a move that would bring them closer to resuming lending, ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda said in a group interview this week. Myanmar owes about $500 million to the ADB and $400 million to the World Bank.

Fresh Assistance

?We can?t provide fresh financial assistance to the country and the World Bank has the same problem, and we together are negotiating with the Myanmar government for solutions,? Kuroda said in Tokyo. ?I expect we can resolve the issue and the ADB hopes to resume assistance to Myanmar soon.?

Japan in April unveiled the plan to forgive 303.5 billion yen ($3.9 billion) in debt owed by Myanmar as the country?s shift toward democracy encourages developed countries to re- engage with the nation. The plan also includes rolling over an additional 199 billion yen of debt that Myanmar will repay to the Japanese government by using bridge loans provided by Japanese lenders.

Since Thein Sein became president in March 2011, he has freed hundreds of political prisoners, eased media restrictions and started peace talks with ethnic minorities. The moves prompted the US to allow companies to invest in Myanmar for the first time in 15 years and ease a ban on imports.

Easing Sanctions

Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi backed the easing of sanctions. The former political prisoner joined parliament for the first time in May after reaching an agreement with Thein Sein in last year.

Myanmar?s economy may grow as much as 8 percent annually if policy makers keep prices under control, increase trade and attract investment, the ADB said in August. About a quarter of the country?s 64 million people have access to electricity, while mobile-phone and Internet usage are among the lowest in Southeast Asia, the ADB said.

North Texas firefighters honored at national memorial

WFAA

Posted on October 7, 2012 at 9:02 PM

Three North Texas firefighters were among those honored at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Park on Sunday.

Their names were among 85 added to bronze plaques at the memorial.

Thousands attended the service in Maryland, including cabinet members and families of the firefighters killed in the last year.

Two of the firefighters honored were from Dallas.

Lt. Todd Krodle died after falling through a roof while fighting an apartment fire in Southwest Dallas in August 2011.

Krodle was born and raised in Hunt County, and lived in Caddo Mills. The 41-year-old coached his two young children and was active in his church.

Dallas firefighter Chris Pham was found unresponsive at his firehouse on June 23, 2011, and died later that day. The medical examiner later ruled the 35-year-old succumbed to coronary artery disease.

Pham was born in Vietnam and graduated from North Garland HIgh School and the University of Texas at Dallas.

Greg Simmons died in April 2011 while fighting a wildfire in Eastland County. It wasn't the flames, but a vehicle that killed him.

Investigators said the thick smoke made it impossible to see, and it appears a car or a fire truck struck Simmons, who was 51 years old.
